I've been on Talktalk since January last year, and I got it for online gaming as well as websurfing. When I was connected (phone was on early, broadband was late) the connection took a little time to establish and I spent much time on the phone to sort it out.

Then it settled down and gave me reasonable connection speeds.

Then after a few weeks it would disconnect randomly (phone and internet).

Then after 4 weeks, it was resolved (or rather, it just happened to start working again).

Then for a few months all was good. I'd connect at a reasonable speed for gaming, though the modem was a bit cheap and had a tendency to die and need to be restarted.

Then, about September or so last year, it began to fall over in earnest. It had always had moments of dropping out in calls, and i'd called up but nothing had ever really been done about it - just the same repeated checks (change filters, do you have extension cables - no i don't , etc and EVERYTHING was in perfect order). But in September it suddenly started dropping out completely for just a few seconds, but EVERY few seconds. I couldn't maintain connection for more than about 15 seconds. I tried to call up, and the phone would cut out while i'm queued. When I DO get through, I tell them to call me back if i disappear, they say ok, and then NEVER did.

Eventually, I demanded a new modem since we both suspected it. Two months later it arrived, after repeated chasing calls (from which they actually make money, unbelieveably). It carried on dropping out but after a time it settled to give me connection for 5 minutes at a time. Not enough to play games with (or raid with, since i was playing Warcraft at the time), but enough time to tease you that the nightmare might be over.

Eventually they sent some people around to look at the box. Shock, there were problems with it...

Six months later, with the new modem installed for 4 months, the connection is very laggy and slow, and i generally avoid using the phone because i don't trust it not to cut out on me.

Last time i called them, the call centre guy whose voice i recognised having repeatedly called them in the past was outright rude to me, telling me that basically i should be happy to have a connection, and that i had no business playing games on it! (FYI, online gaming in does NOT apparently tie up massive resources and downloading).

I'm not entirely sure who is to blame in all this. For sure the TT customer services were absolutely disgusting in my view. Only when i was allowed to speak to the tech support (a great honor apparently, as far as the first line call support were considered) did i get any sense, though even they contradicted each other.

However i also believe that the route of the problem lies in BT's shoddy cabling in the area, that causes so much noise on the line that the connection would break.

Alas, there isn't even cable in my street (in London, in 2008 for chrissakes!) so i can't do anything but move the problem to a different devil of a provider.

If you can go cable, do. If you can't, i wish you luck. But i reckon, before you sign up to anything, you get the engineers to test the line to make sure its acceptable first. If its bad, you're in for a tough time regardless.

Having read so many reviews about TalkTalk broadband, a lot of them very distressing and from obviously angry people, I decided to download as much as I could from this site and from TalkTalk's new member forum, so that when all the problems started arising on the switchover day, I would be ready.
I have been with Pipex for many years without any major problems, except the cost, which is the only reason I am movng to TT.
Having been a data systems engineer for over quarter of a century, I felt I was reasonably prepared and so I took notes of everything that happened, just as I would with any enterprise implementation.
Before I start this review, I have clicked the option on thebroadband-help page which asks me to rate customer support. There is no option for "Didn't need any" so I've clicked a good option just so that I can submit my review.

I will divide this review into four stages -
BEFORE - The paperwork, application and processing
DURING - Ease of implementation and operability
AFTER - Service delivery and performance
ADVICE and COMMENTS

BEFORE
The application process was carried out over the phone and apart from the fact I had to ask the young lady to get her colleague to quieten down a bit so that I could hear what she was saying, it all went well. The documentation is absolutely excellent and I really couldn't fault it in any way - it was actually a BOOKLET containing all my personal requirements, passwords etc and very well written in easy-to-understand terms. The wireless modem arrived in good time. Expectation management in their process is very good indeed and I was at no time concerned. Our telephone wouldn't receive incoming calls for a few hours on switch-over day, and I fully expected this.

DURING
I did exactly what I was told. The CD loaded and I followed the instructions to the word. Sometimes a step would take longer than an impatient person would want, and I wonder if people start pressing things here without waiting. More progress bars / spinning discs etc would be useful, but it's a minor thing indeed, and I might be too critical here.
The process finished and my Internet connection speed went from a slow 2MB to a blistering 6.33MB (middle of a Friday evening), thus blowing the cobwebs out of a system I had grown used to plodding along with.
Although the booklet recommends two alteratons to the router settings (MTU etc) these were not necessary as the router had already been configured. That's a nice touch.
Another nice touch was the way the process added a new account to my Outlook and DIDN'T automatically assume it to be the default account.

I would like to add a step that TalkTalk did not include. When the setup is complete and the broadband works, go into the admin interface and BACKUP the configuration onto your hard drive then store it somewhere safe. If you end up changing settings and losing your way, you can always go back to the state it was in when it worked.

AFTER
I had no need to call TalkTalk for aything, I have not had any detectable dropped connections. My mobile phone connects to the wirelss LAN for internet browsing, my computers talk to each other on peer-to-peer and my firm's laptop connected straight away with the key.
For internet testing, all sites connected and worked faultlessly, including hotmail, banking and secure sockets (SSL). The windows firewall has the right updated configuration and I find the router a breeze to work with.

ADVICE AND COMMENTS
I can't comment on future performance and reliability
I can comment on billing because I have had a TalkTalk telephone account for some years. It has always been excellent, delivering on-line paperless bills which I download and store in Excel format.

Having approached this from an enterprise standpoint, I'd like to add some helpful points to the debate about TalkTalk.

Why do people have so many problems? - This is what I think.
1. I am sure some telephone exchanges have faulty hardware/configuration or wiring for the TalkTalk system. I believe TalkTalk are doing the best they can, and this becomes obvious in the next of my points.
I do believe that when angry customers rub up against frustrated TalkTalk call-centre operaters, problems arise. I think they always will. Thats the nature of techonolgy advancing so quickly in an impatient world

2. There is a members forum on TalkTalk. http://www.talktalkmembers.com and this contains a very good service-status page.
The content and portal are absolutely first class and I wish some of the third party vendors I deal with provided something as good. It quickly becomes obvious that TalkTalk support people are watching this site because they often respond to postings. The other material and guidance on that site is also very helpful indeed.

3. Having sat through the installation process, I realised that some people might not have attended to some basics. First. You really should close any programs that are running, especially anything that might be calling for internet connection in the background OR using a USB socket (auto backups etc)
Second, you really do need to keep your hands off the keyboard and wait for the installation to finish EVEN IF you think it's stalled.

Third, on the TalkTalk forum is some excellent advice about NOT using telephone extension leads and why that is. For my part, I use two leads to go all the way round the skirting boards (cheap bell-wire), and I got away with it! When I eventually re-site my modem so there is no distance between telephone point and the modem, I believe my speed will increase even further. We'll see.

Fourth, go onto the TalkTalk forum before you start, and read what the experts advise.

Fifth. I have seen comments made about the HUAWEI wireless router which suggest that it's some kind of tinpot third-world set up that makes cheap routers. It is not. They employee 68,000 people, 48% of whom are in research and development. The firm delivers major worldwide networking solutions. The only negative comment I can possibly make is that their product is just too configurable and I wonder if people alter settings on the router without knowing too much about what they're doing.

I hope that has proved useful to anyone considering TalkTalk broadband and maybe even to some who have been having problems.

After 18 months stuck with talk talks absolutely diabolical broadband contract I can only thank God that the living nightmare has finally concluded. It has been one long endless procession of fruitless phone calls to talk talks technical faults line,if ,and its a big if, you can actually get through to their dept.and then if you do you generally get ridiculous advise such as ,yes we shall have you back online in no time,so firstly pull out all your phone filters ,switch off the mains electricity, turn off gas, water, then take every cable out of the back of your p.c. tower,if that does not work then put everything back as normal and re-set the modem then turn it off, turn it back on, wait 40 minutes and disconnect all hard wiring from it,take it to your freezer and leave it in there overnight,in the morning replace everything as normal and attempt to log back on,if you are still experiencing difficulty then it must be down to the fact you are using the wrong STD dialing code through an amplitude frequency modulation system that does not accept 300 megacycles ultra high frequency, but having said that it could possibly be an inherent fault in your cordless phone such as a low battery electrolyte level or just simply static capacitor discharge inside the modems voltage regulator, or thyristor breakdown so check all these again and ring me back in 2 days ,goodbye now......... yes you might think I am going slightly over the top re. these talk talk idiots but you can imagine the way i feel especially when they threatened me with a £60 cessation fee, thank god I have now gone on to B.T. broadband it is a 200% better service altogether,to sum up I personally believe you would get a better broadband connection with 2 tin cans and a long piece of string than subscribing to talk talks highway robbers, their chairman Charles Dunstone makes the Brinks Matt gold bullion robbery look like a honest days toil,so take my advice,if you will and stay well clear of these talk talk vandalls.

I have had talktalk for about 21 months When I signed up I got the phone service only. I waited about 3 months for the broadband and finally got connected following an e-mail I sent to the Sun Newspaper. This was in response to an article they wrote praising the Carphone Warehouse. Of course this cost me a lot as I had to pay for dial-up on TalkTalk charges ( I still have copies of the e-mails ).
Before Christmas last year I lost my broadband. It took about a week or more to get back on-line and, when I did get back my download speed was 512Kbps. It took from then until early this month to get my speed back up following numerous long phone calls and carrying out speed tests. Most of the phone calls were to people who didn`t seem to want to help at all !!!. I think that the last call I made took about 45 minutes to speak to someone.
The maximum download speed I have ever had is 4.7 Mbps, so don`t believe the ads saying 8Mbps. My neighbour over the road is with TalkTalk too. He gets about 3.7 Mbps . He gave up trying to get his speed up as he couldn`t stand the long wait to get through to TakTalk.
I can`t believe that I originally moved from Tiscali to TalkTalk because of the advertising. I am now thinking of either going back to Tiscali or signing up with Sky following my recent experiences

I signed up to Talk Talk in January 2008 looking for broadband but also to get some international calls. In brief it has been a complete nightmare. I have been through to the help desk on an almost daily basis, have tried changing cables, modems, deleting and re installing the software all to no avail. I have fortunately had my trial period extended on 2 occasions so have now cancelled just prior to the acct becoming an 18 month contract. I have never had dealings with such an incompotent helpdesk in my life, after hearing of other horror stories on here it beggars belief that Talk Talk are still going! I would advise anyone thinking of signing up to make sure you keep a log of any problems you enocounter and keep getting the trail extended until you are 100 percent happy with it. I gave up after 3 months of misery. This has got to be the most unreliable provider in the UK.
