idnet

Information for this provider last updated on Fri, 18 Nov 2005 16:24:16 GMT

IDNet provide broadband services for home and office users, enabling super-fast always-on Internet access for a flat monthly fee using your existing telephone line.

Capable of receiving data up to forty times faster than a standard analogue modem, our wireless broadband ADSL is a much more suitable service for transporting multimedia data, video, audio and other large files. All while allowing the simultaneous use of both the telephone and Internet. This is particularly useful for small offices and for staff that frequently work from home.

Spam & Virus protection are available for an additional charge.

I actually use Home Max 8 MB package , but its not listed in the drop down menu.

How can I say , IDNet are just superb in every single department. They are 100% UK based and isnt that just a joy to behold. There are no call centres, so no being passed from pillar to post by imbeciles who dont know what they are doing , nor do they just hang up on you like some well known ISP`s do.

The price of £24.99 per month is on the steep side, but you do get the Rolls Royce of ISP`s as opposed to a knackered old Lada with a clapped out engine and 4 flat tyres like some of the very well publicised UK ISP`s...Pipex, Talk Talk, Orange .........need I go on.

Stable connection, no line droppage, support to kill for and a joy to use .........thoroughly and totally recommended.

Don't be fooled to sign up with BT, Wanadoo and the like. They'll maybe save you a pound or so a month but they'll leave you on hold for an hour when you need them. And when you do reach them they don't have a clue. I tried to sign up with NTL broadband (as they were my current cable provider). Numerous attempts were made during 6 months but I never got through!

When you call IDnet, you get straight through to a person and s/he is usually able to help you, and if not you'll be transferred to the right person within a minute. As a Linux user I needed to know that the hardware they provide is supported. They were the only ISP I tried who could tell me the make and model of the modem they provide.

Speed and availibility has been 100% since the day I was connected a couple of weeks ago. Highly recommended!

I've had use of broadband before and numerous friends have said they are happy with their 'bt broadband' connection but after having a good look around and exploring this site i decided to explore my options a little further.

I had heard good but also alot of bad reviews about bt,ntl, aol etc., so decided customer service was of high importance and to look a bit further than the numerous cd's posted in my door. After alot of hard searching i narrowed things down to biscit and idnet.

In honesty i couldn't really find much between the two so i opted for idnet.
So far so good. I've been with them over two months now and the connection is very fast and reliable. There have been a few instances where i felt i've waited a little longer than normal for my web page to come up but that's it basically. Everything has been excellent. Very fast set-up, no messing around-just connect up and go, extremely quick replies to all my initial questions, all by very prompt return call. Overall, exactly the service i was looking for.

Choosing a Broadband supplier is a daunting task. Make a mistake and you could pay heavily over a long period of time. There is plenty of good advice both on this site and elsewhere, but even if you follow it religiously there is still no guarantee that you will get what you hope for. I read a hundred or more reviews on broadband-help. Somepeople are unstinting in their praise for their ISP. Others are equally forthright in their condemnation of the same ISP. The reasons for this sort of discrepancy are not easy to identify. Levels of service do vary as do customers' expectations. In the end a decision has to be made. In making my own decision I decided to give a low priority to the technical aspects and to the question of cost and to reply substantially on gut feeling:- which ISP did I feel I could most happily relate to. This is how I came to Idnet.

Initial Contact. I spoke to a large number of ISPs. Some were difficult to contact, some were nearly impossible. In many cases all you could talk to was a sales person who could do little more than recite a script. Not so at Idnet. My enquiry was fielded by the Network Engineer, no less who explained simply but thoroughly what Idnet had to offer and was able to explain critical technical matters in a way that an amateur could understand. This initial contact was by far the most satisfactory of all that I made and on the basis of it I made the decision in principle to go ahead with Idnet.

Hardware. The broadband-help site gives the impression that only an ethernet version is available. My understanding is that Idnet recommend an ethernet router for the best results and they supply only this type of equipment. However, new customers may use their existing hardware or purchase elsewhere either an ethernet router or usb modem. I took the ethernet router option and this has proved to be invaluable advice. The router is genuinely on all the time, extremely quick and totally reliable. (This is in comparison wiyh my wife's computer which has broadband from a major ISP via a usb modem.) In addition, the wireless network really does work which is more than can be said for my previous equipment which, I think, fell foul of Windows ICS.

Service provision. Five days was quoted for line connection. Service arrived before this.

Speed. The system is very fast. Response is virtually instantaneous.

Help/Setting up. I have not really had to use the Help facility:- this is the sort of Help you really need. One telephone call had to be made as there was a glitch with the e-mail password. This was rectified during the course of a short telephone call. The initial setup went like clockwork- including setting up the wireless network. If you really need help a normal cost telephone call gets you to a real person who knows what he is doing, in this country, not thousands of miles away and difficult to understand.

Reliability. I have been with Idnet for nearly a month now. This is a short period in which to make a judgement but so far the connection to the server has been imemdiate, there have been no error messages, the connection has never been interrupted and there has been no sign of congestion at any time or on any day of the week.

Cost. The monthly subscription is modest (go to Idnet's site for the current costs) and compares very favourably with others, particularly the well known names. There is a connection charge, there is no free modem and there are no "gifts" or inducements. If you purchase a router there is a substantial initial outlay but my experience is that this is money well spent. There really is no point in taking the very cheapest option if the service you buy is a poor one.
Lastly,

Linux. I am experimenting with Linux as a possible alternative to Windows. Currently I am trying Knoppix which you can download at no cost and which will run from the CD if you do not wish to install it. Knoppix has an autoconfiguration facility which recognised the router, the network and the service provider automatically. So far I have tried only the Mozilla browser although there are others included. It is certainly as good as Windows and is reputedly more stable.
