I chose AOL because they were a popular company and also because they offered no contract broadband although there was a £30 connection fee, but then you get to keep the modem. Initially, I thought it was a bad decision since I had to wait for a couple of weeks for the connection to be up. However, once I was connected, I can't say that I've really faced any problems. I've read in several places that the AOL software is problematic. I haven't installed it and hence my internet works fine!
I only had to call customer service once which was when I had a problem connecting to internet the first time but that problem was sorted while I was talking to the representative and I wouldn't say that experience was bad.
I haven't received any bills at my home after that although the direct debits are taking place on time. I can however view the bills online although the interface isn't too great.
So, overall, I wouldn't really complain but I've seen better.

I feel the pain of many of the reviewers from 2009 and my experience mirrors their frustrations: it is a bit like being stuck in the 7th circle of hell or an even less funny version of 'Groundhog Day'. I have spent a mint on calls to Tech Support since early 2009, but the problems keep occurring: AOL desktop software crashes every day, you can almost set your clock by it, between 12:00 and 13:00hrs. Booting up in the morning, invariably there is no connection to the AOL server (Safari is happy the computer is connected to the router and I can still print wirelessly from a Mac and Windows system but not surf the net). "TCP/IP not available" rears its ugly head at least 2-3 times per day and I have reconfigured my old router (DG834G V.3) and new one (DGN2000) numerous times but nothing changes. I too have removed the front panel of the BT phone jack to attach to the test switch and it is still pants. Now AOL are trying to hold me to ransom for a MAC code (they reckon I am still in contract therefore will have to cough up £150), however that sneaky move puts them in breach of the OfCom regs so they will be receiving a communication from OfCom soon and are obliged to issue the MAC code in 5 working days... hmm, why do I feel that won't happen. The only way AOL will waive the £150 penalty is if Tech Support verify that they can't fix the problems I am experiencing.. well, I'm sure these guys work on a commision basis so getting them to admit failure is about as likely as getting turkeys to vote for Xmas. Anyone found a sane way out of this madness..?

Having been with AOl for a long time I was offerred about a year and a half ago a special loyalty price to stay with them. £9.99 pm) As my broadband speed was not very fast but reliable (I do not need a very fast connection) and as i had been paying £20 pm I accepted. All went well until a few months ago I was contacted by AOL to say that they would have to up my monthly amount to £18.99pm I telephoned them and an amount of £15.99 pm was agreed with a 8m speed. I also had the 'oppurtunity to purchase a D-Link wired/ wireless router from them (my existing one was getting old)
The explanation from AOl about the increase in sub fee was that my local exchange being small was managed by BT who charged AOL more for this.
What a mistake I have made, its like being back on dial up, getting connected is often a hour of swithching the router off and on hundreds of times. Carphonewarehouse is obviously trying to 'milk the company on their past good name, that definately is now non existant, their help service is a joke, I probably would have to learn hindu to get any decent info there as the indian personel there who are more than likely overqualified for what they are doing and no doubt underpaid cannot be of much help in these matters like this. Like our 'trusted' bankers' when do these opportunistic company baggers and strippers get theirs? PROBALBLY NEVER! And I am locked in with them until the middle of next year!

Having been an AOL user for a number of years I'm appalled by their apparent lack of ability at sorting out a broadband connection problem. I've bought a new router, new cables, double-checked connections and done everything they've asked. Until now... The latest is they've asked me to "borrow" one of their supported routers so they can sort out the problem.
In other words, just pop round to a few neighbours: "Sorry to bother you, John, but do you have a Netgear XYZ123withpike that I can borrow for AOL to sort out my broadband?" "No problem, Mark" says John, just happen to have a spare one here. Help Yourself."
What planet are these people on?!?
My advice. Don't touch AOL with a bargepole. Don't go near them. I'm giving them the elbow and finding a broadband supplier more in tune with today's requirements.

Follow up to my previos review about the shocking service we get from the new AOL. The router promised to me a month ago didn't arrive (not surprised) I got a letter after 4 weeks thanking me for renewing my account (I did not!) and no idea at all that I had thrown in the towell and asked for the MAC code.
We are finally emigrating to BT next week and I am already using the BT e mail address. Lets hope this is the end of the trouble. My only worry now is that they do not cancel my credit card payments and I have yet another battle with them.
Anyone thinking of going to AOL my advice is don't and if you are getting all sorts of promises from their useless customer service just give up and go elsewhere it is less hassle.
