talktalk xxxxxcellent, i must admit that when i changed over in dec 2007 first i had a few problems of the connection dropping but since jan 2008 i have been getting download speed of 6.98 plus all my phone calls free. good value for the money. sat customer

I've just cancelled my contract with Bulldog to migrate to BE. Be has the best reputation, not only for speeds but for truly unlimited broadband without insane "fair usage policies".
Big companies like Virgin or BT might have good infrastructure but they also have more customers, i.e. lower speeds and very slow “peak hour” speeds. Do your research, read reviews and don’t just believe all the ads you see in the Underground or on TV. I’d rather pay £10 extra for a good service than moan 24/7 for my new broadband service that is slower than dial up when I use it and fast when I’m asleep.

Might be worth testing out Pipex broadband, they do offer business grade broadband but anyone can buy it.

I regularly get a full 20meg sustained download and around 800 upload using Virgin. I, for example need to download software direct from Adobe almost daily during testing and i get those speeds when download 1.5gig files. i watch the speeds very closely, i know what im seeing so i know it's possible.

i have sky broadband, it is really good value at £10 a month, the speed is great usually 12meg which is one of the fastest iv seen.

I changed from Tiscali to O2 due to the special pricing and I've found O" incredible. Tiscali dropped connection and gave me an average speed of around 1meg. O2 initially doubled that at around 2 meg and recently seems to have jumped up to 3.5 meg! Tiscali were a pain cancelling as they continued to bill me and it took a pretty stroppy letter before they stopped billing me and gave me an apology! O2 have been excellent

I'm with Orange on an 8 meg service and it rarely drops below 5Mbps.
I was going to change to a better deal as i was on 2 meg speed and 2Gb allowance but I got a good deal to stay with them, 8Meg speed, 10Gb allowance, free livebox and free IP phone line with free 01 & 02 calls anytime. All for £12 a month and they gave me 3 months free!!!
And their customer service is pretty good for a large company.

Don't even think about Pipex or Tiscali - terrible (and expensive)technically - never spoke to anyone in UK until I cancelled - changed to O2 who are fantastic...

hi firstly thanx for this service to test my speed i knew they was something up with my provider and this site has proved it to me. i was uploading photos to send to the family abroad and it took so long over 2hours also when i try to download trust me it takes forever. i am currently paying for speeds of 8mb with BT and i'm appalled to discover i'm only receiving 1.7mb and i only live down the road from my nearest telephone exchange, i'm disgusted i thought i could put my trust into one of the biggest telecoms in the uk (BT) Bad Tendencies more like. where do i stand in cancelling my contract in which i'm not happy with and feel this service oh excuse me sorry what service was missold to me?

The residents of Hull and the surrounding area have no choices other than the Kingston Communications' Karoo service. (Take it or leave it!) It's time some of the major providers came into this area. I changed from Kingston Comms to a BT line so that I could use Axis Communications, but their broadband service leaves a lot to be desired. Even with the BT line there are no major broadband providers covering the surrounding areas. It's time this situation was addressed.

Currently on AOL Broadband £9.99 per mth. As upgrading my orange mobile phone, been offered free Broadband form Orange 10 GB usage per month and speed 8mb. Any one experience Orange Broadband, AOL told me they had bad ratings for quality and speed. Any views

Just switched to O2 Standard 8MB unlimited package - and never imagined it would be so easy and make such a difference. Previously a loyal Demon customer for 12 years - but had enough. Expensive, never pass on revised product tariffs, speed never above 3.4MB and more often between 1MB and 33K - yes thats right 33K. Pitiful performance - and never any acknowledgment of just how poor the service is. Now sipping along at 6.7MB and I cant stress enough how polished and simple the whole transition was.

AOL are one of the poorest performers in this department. the average speed that we have is a poxy 2.02 megs. and if you call the help center's what a load of crap and lies they spin of to you about outages what ever that means is up to you to ponder. i for one would rate them as total U.S.to put it mildly at best

I have been into this issue more than once with my provider.I would point out the follwing :-
1) Speed improved by 60% when Virgin Media supplied me with an up-to-date Cable Modem.
2) My wireless Router also degrades the speed by about 30%. It might improve if I updated that as well, or reduced the no. of computers it services.

I have SkyHD and Sky+ so was offered Sky Broadband for free. I upgraded to "Sky Max" and now my download speeds are around 13.1 Meg(1.6MB/s). Sky Max is only £10 a month, far less than any other internet provider for the same speed. Sky are excellent, I highly recommend them. My neighbour has Virgin(cable) and pays over £30 a month for his internet. My download speed was equal to his when I was using "Sky Base" which is free. A big thank you to Sky !

o2 does not work for me. I am only getting 0.5Mb speed when it is supposed to be 7Mb. Oh gosh, I wish it was better, regret taking 02. We will see if they can fix this, but it is not looking good.

I use BT and always have. My line capable of 8mb/sec ( I'm about 2 miles from the exchange ). I get 5.6 but have been over 7mb/sec so cannot understand BT's bad rating.

I have Talk Talk and the maxim speed I reach is 6.6 Meg which is what any body I know with Talk Talk achieves. The only problem is this does not last all day. In the after noon to late evening my conection slows down. I do speed tests using thinkbroadband.com and I always have my maximum speed late at knight and in the morning so it seems I have maximun speeds when every body else is at work. I will probably try BE next as I cant get Virgin as I live in a block of flats and its not available but only on ground level. Partly satisfied with Talk Talk.

i am currently a customer with o2 broadband and it was the worst mistake ive ever made with broadband. i am supposed to be getting "up to" 8mb but i have done daily speed tests for a month and the results are appauling, i rarely even get 0.5mb, which isnt even a 16th of what im supposed to be getting...i have tried canceling with o2 but trying to get the mac code from them is impossible so instead i have stoped them from obtaining payments from my bank account...there customer service is ridiculous they dont even have support that understand basic english...they do no uphold there end of the contract and i will never return to o2 because out of all the isp's ive been with o2 has to b the worst by far...i wud have better speed if i connected via a modem. the awful connection that i get is nothing to do with my setup which they insist it is or my area because i live right beside my local exchange...i dont use long cables all is setup properly with the best exquipment cause i thought that would of made a difference...i was also supposed to be on adsl2+ and when i logged onto my router my router was able to tell me that nothing was working for the adsl2+ and even the internet for adsl wasnt working. i recommend never to join o2 broadband no matter what they say. i recommend bt because they have told me exactly what my connection speed will be and told me that i wont receive 8mb but it will never be as bad a o2. atleast bt are truthful and are not buttering me up with false promises. never ever go to o2 and if u want proof that there speeds are awful email psychedelic-funk@live.com and i will send u screen dumps of my daily speed tests so u can see for yourself what they are like....and dont forget i live beside the exchange so i should of been recieveing good connections even if it wasnt 8mb but definatly not 0.5mb and that was at 1.00pm. screw o2!!!!!!!

Sadly speeds aren't very good and I need a good speed for Xbox Live. I get terrible lag and I am at least a second behind gamers on the other teams. Yet a friend living close by who is with another ISP has no problems whatsoever (same exchange). Prices are very good but service very poor.

I have just been installed by bt and they said at the point of sale that i would get a 6mbps connection to the internet. 2 weeks into my contract. i had been doing speed tests all day for 2 weeks and was getting an average of 2.08 mbps. i then contacted ofcom and was advised to make a complaint to bt through the ofcom code of practice. they sorted everything for me. they cancelled my telephone line and broadband within the first month of my contract as they broke the rules of the point of sale t&c's. im now with virgin media and the service is excellent. im on the 20MB connection and im recieving about 14mbps.
for all you gamers and downloaders, virgin media broadband 20MB+ is highly recommended by me and other users i know. Another satisfied customer.

i have virgin and i can tell you that it is just awful, the top speed i mite get my downloads is about 60 kb p/s!!!! and live 15 minuets from a city!
my friend who lives just down the road from me has talk talk and i have seen his computer running at 600 kb p/s!!!!!!
personally i think talk talk should be up there!!

Just found this website - excellent! I recently upgraded my "up to 2Mbps" package with Virgin Media to "up to 8 Mbps" but I only get a fairly consistent 2Mbps and occasional loss of internet connection at busy times. I spent ALL Tuesday morning being passed from Tech Support Virgin on-line chat help to BT 151 Faults phoneline when I was trying to find out if my old wiring (old Master Socket so can't do that test where you plug the modem into the back of the socket) and the extension line from this Master Socket in the hall to my computer in the dining room could be the problem of my lower-than-paid-for speed. Also there is only ONE telephone line into the house which divides into two separate telephone accounts - my partner's has a new NTE5 Master socket and he's on AOL and his speeds are double mine. His computer is right next to the NTE5. BT Openreach will charge me £130 It seems to check my internal wiring. But the upshot of Tuesday morning was that neither Virgin nor BT would accept responsibility for doing anything to help! I'm now thinking of asking an independent ex BT engineer to come and pronounce a verdict on the wiring, inside and out. Or maybe I should just accept that 2Mbps is O.K? - even your website speed test indicates that it is 98% efficient (?) P.S. I am not technical and struggle with some of the jargon used on websites e.g. ping, attenuation etc.

i think bt are full of shit they say they will give u up to 8meg downloads speeds but that means u have no change orf getting any where near that i get 450 k per second if im realt lucky. and in these day and ages that a pill of "cow poooo". why dont the like of bt, sky and other companies do it the same as other places and offer better speeds. shall i tell u y they dont its because of money. bt arnt getting enuff money back so f..k the wee person that pays 4 a shit service. it realy pisses me of when the like of bt, ske do this when will the compains relise the wee people that pays 4 a shit internet wants and will pay 4 a better internet well thats what i think.

VirginMedia supplying 20MB? It depends where you live! Big Clue is that if they can't offer you 50MB in your Area, they won't be able to (reliably) get 20MB to you either, and you'll be stuck with 750k upload.
The truth is that the Virgin Cable Network is still mad up fo several different networks, and customers in areas cabled by NTL get a different level of service and support from those on the other networks because the NTL Network switches are inadequate and not fibre capable. Also the Virgin Help desk STILL cannot access the NTL switches to check the customers status.
I pay for 20megabytes which I get for 8 hours following a visit from an Engineeer (actually I get it from midnight previous to the Engineers arrival) or for about 2 hours after a New Modem is installed. But then the problems start and shortly afterwards I am luck to get 8MB during the day falling to 2.5MB at Weekends.
Reason is simple, take a look at the what this site reports as Virgin's "quality of Service" more than half the packets they send have to be resent.. strange how it works at 98% QOS for the first few hours ...
Mind you they do better than BT, after 18 months they actually succeeded in squeezing 1.3MB down my phone line! I do live within 5 miles of the exchange, BUT the Canal I live next to adds a "hidden" extra 3 miles as it is a conservation area and they are not allowed visible cables so they have to route to the nearest Bridge ....
