Wanadoo 8Mb Campaign: Complaints Upheld by ASA

Last updated: Wednesday, February 08, 2006 9:32:00 AM GMT

The ASA has today published its adjudication on complaints received about Wanadoos' advertising campaign claiming "Up to 8Meg".

Complaints were made by member of the public and Wanadoo competitors who on the grounds that "Up to 8Meg" was not available to most people and the advertisement was therefore misleading.

There were five complaints in total. Three came from BT, Tiscali and WCS advertising agency (on behalf of Bulldog Broadband). The remaining two complaints came from members of the public.

Four out of the five complaints were upheld by the ASA. It stated that the TV advertisements breached TV Advertising Standards Code rules 5.1 (Misleading advertising), 5.2.1 (Evidence) and 5.2.3 (Qualifications). It ruled that the advertisements must not be shown again in their present form(s). The press ads breached CAP Code clauses 3.1 (Substantiation), and 7.1 (Truthfulness).

I have wanadoo broadband. I also objest to the advertising hype issued by most isp's. untill the exchanges/telephone lines are upgraded we're stuck with slower speeds.I live about 1 mile from local exchange,2 meg is max.

Why are Broadband provides allowed to quote " IF YOUR LINE WILL SUPPORT THIS SPEED. Copper cable will support greater bandwidths / speed than any provider can currently supply now on in the foreseable future.

I do not want this to be considered spam, but I thought I shoudl tell you my story and then, tell you that I have set up a new forum www.wanadooproblems.co.uk so that we can collect all these wanadoo issues in one place. I am sure Wanadoo will find out about teh site soon and their legal department will be in touch - but hey - at least they will have had to have read all the posts! Here's my story (well,l part of it because it goes on an on and on and...):

OK, you're wondering... Why the forum?

Well, because it is now 28 March 2006 and I have not had my Wanadoo broadband connection (which I'm paying for still) since 7 February 2006...

That's 7 weeks if my sums are correct.

And in that 7 weeks, oh what fun I've had...

I think I have spoken to every member of the Wanadoo Technical Support Team... But never the same person twice... And even when I do ask for a person by name, I'm told that they "do not work at this call centre... We have lots of call centres... Do you have the person's extension number?"... No I reply, when I asked for an extension number I was told that these are not given out! "Well, because we have so many call centres, it is not possible for me to locate that person... I will help you..."

They then proceed to tell me that they will help me, I tell them that I am sure they will not be able to as this problem has been occurring for weeks now, but they insist... I tell them that I should speak to a team leader, in fact I would like to speak to a team leader... "That's not possible. Our team leaders are in a meeting at the moment".

They then proceed to tell me that they will put a fault through... For the umpteenth time. I tell them that this has been done previously, on many occasions. But they insist.

And so the saga continues...

And... I nearly forgot to mention that in the beginning, their helpful Technical Support staff had me uninstalling, reinstalling, setting the Livebox back to manufactu
