Vineyard Haven, Martha Mansion House Inn, Hotel & Spa will once again play host to the Obama Press Corps while they cover the First Family’s vacation this August on Martha’s Vineyard. Setting up shop on the historic hotel’s Cupola roof deck overlooking scenic Vineyard Haven Harbor, television crews and national news personalities will take to the air, reporting on the who, what, when and where of the President’s visit.
With the Obama familys low-profile during their Vineyard holiday, you would think that the Press Corp has the opportunity to avail themselves of the amenities that the Mansion House Inn offers, however, according to Mansion House owner, Susan Goldstein, Twenty or thirty desks are constantly occupied with reporters typing she continued noting, It is like watching folks on a pier fishing, standing around, waiting to hook the big one. The reporters eat at their desks, ordering take out from Zephrus Restaurant or one of the other Main Street eateries.
Last summer, a flash rumor circulated that the Obamas were going to drive down Main Street. Locals and visitors gathered on the wrap around Mansion House porch, traffic slowed down and with the quaint Main Street shops with flags waving, it looked like a scene from the last century. Mansion House owners put up a banner at the end of the porch, urging the Obamas to enjoy their vacation. No one knows if the President saw it, but the banner did elicit 21st Century blogging: some of it even racist and ugly. One person emailed Loony liberals. Hope you like those death panels! We will never come back and will spread the word… Another emailed, What a disgrace to see the sign you have put up. Here’s hoping your occupancy rates plummet!
But on the Vineyard it was non partisan and celebratory. Tourists and Islanders alike, mostly viewed the signs, flags, and the occasional traffic inconveniences, caused by the First Family, as validation that the Vineyard was a special place, a favorite destination of Presidents.
