Hanaro, Korea’s second-biggest fixed-line and broadband operator, has appointed Hong Kong based solutions provider Broadband Network Systems Ltd (BNS) to implement a complete Broadband TV service solution.

BNS won the contract on the strength of their tailor made project plan which included all aspects of Broadband TV service delivery, from a detailed market analysis, business model recommendation and network design to a complete content and programming strategy.

Hanaro, who has 3.8 million subscribers (including 2.77 million broadband subscribers), or 24% market share, is a pioneer in broadband service development, having launched the world’s first commercial ADSL service in 1999. Broadband TV is the first of a number of value added services in the multimedia and digital convergence area the company is planning to roll out in the near future.

“We were very impressed with BNS’s unique set of service offerings and capabilities in the Broadband TV domain,” Mr Dongshik Byun, Senior VP, New Business Unit at Hanaro said. “BNS delivered a complete market-ready service recommendation that fully met Hanaro’s requirements for an integrated BBTV solution, including a clear strategy, technical solutions, content and implementation plans,” he said.

Korea, with a population of 48 million has the highest broadband penetration worldwide with over 11 million broadband subscribers. Of the nearly 16 million Korean households, 78 percent have a broadband connection, more than four times the home broadband penetration rate of North America.

“The broadband market particularly in places like Korea is getting increasingly competitive,” Mr Jeffrey Soong, CEO of BNS said. “Operators really need to look at how to create value for their customers, not only to arrest market share erosion but also to create lasting growth.

“Broadband TV offers a unique opportunity for operators like Hanaro who want to differentiate themselves in a highly competitive environment and we are delighted to have been chosen to partner with Hanaro in this project,” Mr Soong said.

In preparation for the project roll out, Hanaro has completed the lab testing of required equipment and is working towards a small-scale launch in the second half of 2005.
