Hi guys, hope you can help
About two years i had a LAN network connection in my universities halls of residence, which worked fine - plug in the ethernet cable and away you go!
I then moved in with my (ex)wife and got an ADSL connection with POipex UK via a modem etc. Thats when this problem started.
It worked fine until i updated avast anti-virus home edition and zone-alarm pro. Then when i rebooted the computer it just stopped dead! I mean nothing, internet said it was connected yet 'problem loading page' all the way. I panicked and just set up my ex's computer on the internet and left mine upstairs. For two years.
The computer works ok so i'm certain there is not physical problem and it can;t be the ethernet adaptor because that worked prior to the ADSL cock-up.
I had Virgin Broadband installed yesterday (via ethernet cable modem) and i am having the same problem. I can ping my own address, i can ping www.google.com and various others and my ipconfig /all also gives me the response that everything is fine. My connection settings are set to automatic AND they match the ipconfig /all results to the letter.
I even booted up in safe mode and it STILL wouldn't connect. I have uninstalled all my anti-virus and firewall software (risky i know) and still nothing. It doesn't let any of my internet programs connect either (MSN Messenger, Soulseek, Limewire).
There are a couple of things i have noticed though:
- One day my PC randomly deleted MSPaint and Internet Explorer which i re-installed yesterday.
- Whenever i try and open Windows Firewall it won't let me, it gives the error message that it cannot start.
I am at my wits end, i have all of my data backed up to DVD's and am just waiting on a copy of XP before i format the thing and start afresh but if you guys can help me before i resort to that i'd be well grateful, i'll even buy you a cuppa tea!
cheers

TBH your best bet is going to be to re-install but you could try a "repair" over the top of the existing install.
Don't forget to get some windowsupdates on pronto when you've re-installed as it sounds like an RPC service error to me and you will be rapidly hacked again if you don't.
Seeing you can ping google, obviously DNS resolution and routing is working fine.
One thing that might be worth checking is that you haven't got a proxy configured accidentally or via some spyware in IE. (Tools > Options > Connections > Lan settings).

Hello,
If you have Zone Alarm its an issue because of the latest Update by Microsoft.
It wont help changing the internet connection.
Even a dial up account would have the same issue.
Please go to the zone alarm website and you would find help regarding the same.
http://download.zonealarm.com/bin/free/pressReleases/2008/LossOfInternetAccessIssue.html

Brad
