I am using a Netgear 54G router/modem and have one computer connected with an ethernet cable. I also use another computer and log on to the wireless network...
If I run a speed test it says I'm getting 6.8 mbps on the ethernet cable machine but seem to get regularly only 3.4 mbps when connecting wirelessly..........
Is this the router slowing down the information transfer and therefore impacting the results ?
Would I get a better connection with fewer phones or moving the router closer to the main bt point ( master socket )
Thanks for help

All wireless connections have a heavy overhead on the data acknowledgement and can seem to slow down the transfer rate.
Bear in mind you will only get about half what the rated wireless speed is (around 20-25meg on a 54meg wireless) but this is not your issue.
I would suspect it is your encryption that is causing this massive slowdown, assuming of course its not that you are out of range!
Try (temporarily) turning off your encryption and testing again and seeing if the speed returns.
One other point we've noted with issues before is with Belkin cards in the PCs and none Belkin access points with thruput probs.
Check these over and post your results out of interest!

Also try and check if the firewall is causing any issue on the speed.
But turning of your encryption not recommended as it will allow others to use your wireless connection.
