I thought I would through in my limited contribution here since Shadow has been doing such a good job.
Skype is a good service. I use it both for its instant messenger capabilities and its ability to freely call other people all over the world for free. On top of that they have some paid services. One is Skype Out and this is where you can dial out to most places in the world. To call mobiles, I think it is like .27 a minute, and like .017 a minute for local calls.
They also have a Skype In service where you can get your own phone number in any number of countries that rings to your computer. You get free voicemail and it is only 30 euros a year.
I have had good luck with the service and very few problems. The one problem I have had is calling some mobiles out because it does not send caller id information which is blocked by some cell phones.

I tried out Skype at my neighbours. It was interesting. I did not know it cost money to dial out though. I talked to someone for like 15 minutes. He never said anything about it costing money.

Thank you for the kind words Stitch. Sometimes I get obssessed with an idea and go a bit overboard. Guess that is the case here.
Skype does seem like a real good option. I just don't get the same feel for them as some of the others. Meaning the come across more as a pc-to-pc service where a lot of the other options really work hard to create a seamless environment between telephony and VOIP.

I got indoctrinated into Skype a while back, so I continue to use it. I ususally use my mobile phone for long distance calls, so I just use Skype to talk to friends directly.

When I used it I was able to talk to my friend on the telephone. They did not even have a pc. So you can talk to someone without a pc with Skype.

I have ordered the Skype intro kit. It was like 9 euros. It has an ear-piece, a microphone and like 30 minutes of free calling for Skype out.
i will let you know how it goes. This is my first real test for Skype.

That is not bad. let me know when you get signed up and send me your id so I can give you a call. I use Skype too but more for instant messenger, voice chat than for making phone calls.
