I do know in the old days that newsgroups were popular ways for people to exchange messages.  We have these kinds of bulletin boards now, but you used to have a seperate program and you would download news messages from your ISP and they had all kinds of different topics you could exchange messages with. Probably the best of anyone out there.  They are not cheap, especially for their unlimited plan though.  Also Usenet Monster is much cheaper, but does not retain news for as long. I am an old-school newsgroup junkie, but a lot of the feeds seem to be sparse from the providers.
