What is the biggest thing that would make you want to change providers? Would it be price? Custome service? Downtime? Extras? Limits on access?

What would do it for you? For me it is price. Because the speed of the service, it can be influenced by the length of the phone line, its quality and interference (among other factors). Bulldog is keen to see ADSL2+ working in the field and not just in the lab.

Even though ADSL2+ might be able to run at more than 20Mbps, in reality speeds might not be that great. The Cable & Wireless ISP has already found, for example, that line length has a major impact on speed.

Homes less than 1km from an exchange are, on average, getting around 18Mbps, while those at 1.5km are getting around 15Mbps. At 2km, the speed drops to 10Mbps, although Bulldog is keen to point out that these are just rough estimates and depend on the quality of each line.

Commenting on the trial, Bulldog chief architect Gavin Young said the ISP wants to "ensure that our broadband services meet the increasing needs of our customers", and that "ADSL2+ represents the next evolution of broadband access"."

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/02/01/bulldog_adsl/

Newsgroup Providers

Does anyone know of a broadband provider who has good nntp newsgroup coverage? So you do not have to sign a long-term contract.

If you get a yearly contract the price raises to £17.99 but with no set-up fee.

Sounds like it might be an option, but some people are saying they are not receiving close to the 8mb maximum listed, so I would do some research.

Another £9.99 a month provider

When doing some research on free internet, I came across another low-cost provider. Predictable, set monthly rental charges without any variations or surprise bills.
* No Limits. Demon Home is an unmetered service with no download restrictions or limits to the time you spend online.
* Easy to install. No need for an engineer to visit your home and new connections are simple to set up by yourself.

* Access to our top 2Mbps connection (maximum speed downstream) is dependent on the proximity of your telephone connection to the BT exchange. In some areas only 500kbps connections may be available.

Does not seem like too bad of a deal. They are long-established and I have heard good things. This is good for people who do not use up a lot of bandwidth and/or travel a lot, for example.

* Up to 8 meg superfast broadband
* 3p per minute for your time online
* FREE access to Bulldog email, webspace and online storage
* FREE anti-spam and anti-virus protection on Bulldog email
* FREE Internet Security Suite for 90 days
* FREE USB modem

Sounds like a good deal for casual users. You get the benefit of broadband when you need it, but if you do not spend much time online you do not have to live with a high monthly bill.

broadband for less then £10.00

1Mbps Broadband for Less Than a Tenner!

UK Online are now offering a 1Mbps Internet connection for less than £10.

At just £9.99, UK Online's 1mb broadband package offers unbeatable value for money and there are no set usage or download limitations.

UK Online's broadband packages are well priced across the board, with their 2mbps connection costing just £14.99.
