Site problems

The server hosting the webiste recently had it's hard disk replaced (due to bad sectors on the old one).

As well as the disk change, the website code was also upgraded to the latest version of Microsoft .NET.

It seems that Microsoft, in its wisdom, changed the behaviour of how errors are handled between .NET version 1.x and 2.x. In version 1, errors in the website code were just skipped over and no-one (including us!) were any the wiser. However, version 2.x now responds to errors by shutting down the web server (helpful huh?:w00t.

We've spent the last few days tracking down the errors that cause the shut down. We're getting closer to nailing the final bugs but there are still a few times when users might get undexpected errors.

What is RSS?

I see this RSS label on some of the forums and am not sure what that means. Does it mean I have new posts? When I click on it, I get a lot of unformatted information like the forum but it is not clean. It says something about XML on it.

We've embarked on the very tedious (but necessary) task of updating every single broadband product listed on our site.

This will bring data bang up to date and should be complete in the next few days.

The value of this update, once complete, will be an even stronger confidence in the broadband advanced listing tool

Registration difficulties

Several people have experienced problems with the new registration process.

The process should go like this:-
- You create an account by filling in the registration form
- You are sent an email with a link to click to confirm your registration.
- You now have full access to the site!
- A confirmation email is sent to you welcoming you to broadband-help

It would appear that some of you are not receiving the emails in order to complete your registrations. We believe that we've now fixed the problem. However, if anyone is still having problems, please let us know and we'll manually activate your registration.

The latest feature to be restored is the ability to able to post comments on news items. When viewing news items, look towards the bottom of the page as there is now a section inviting

Site Registration and Login FAQ

Q.] Why do I need to login?
A.] When you login, you verify your identity. Once you are verified, you can freely post forum messages, ISP reviews and navigate areas of the site that are restricted to normal (Guest) users.

Q.] Why should I register?
A.] We really appreciate your comments and views! Over the 5 years or so that Braodband-help.com has been running, it's your comments that make the site such a useful resource. However, with our old way of doing things, we noticed that there were a few instances of "Anonymous" users posting on the site with a view to promoting goods and services for their own gain. One of our missions is to give you the best and most impartial advice possible. This is why we are now rigorously insisting on authentic user registration and logins before posting content on the site.

Q.] Can I supply a random/bogus email address when registering?
A.] No.

Fake email adresses are of no use to anyone. It makes it impossible to run a website and keep users informed of developments, send them password reminders, use the forums (the list goes on!). It's also very difficult for you to remember which "fake" email you used to register on this site so chances are you'll create another "fake" login thus adding to our management overhead, storage etc.

We would ask that you register with an authentic email address. Our registration process is designed to authenticate you against your email address.

Q.] What happens to my email address and personal details when I register?
A.] Please see our privacy policy

Q.] Can I use the same login throughout the site?
A.] Yes. You can use the same login for posting ISP reviews, using the forums and also getting to My Broadband-help

Q.] Can I change my registration details (e.g. password / email
A.] Yes. Please go to My Broadband-help. Changes to passwords are immediate. Changes to email address need validation (you need to follow the instructions in the email that's sent to you)

Q.] I can't login to the site!
A.] This is most likely because you have cookies disabled in your browser.
Our login process uses cookies and therefore requires that cookies are enabled in your browser.

New Forums

Welcome to the new Broadband-help.com forums!

As part of the site re-launch, we are pleased to give you new forums to use.

We spent a long time evaluating various packages and believe that this is the best in terms of ease of use and functionality.

Some of the exciting things that you can now do are:-

- Subscribe to topics and receives email alerts when there is any response to your questions!
- Subscribe to topics by RSS (keeping with Broadband-help's strategy of providing RSS feeds to you)
- Upload / use your own avatars / photos.
- EMail and private message other users.

We hope that you enjoy the new look forums.

If you used the old forums, your user login will work here.

We weren't able to pull accross all of the old posts from the old forum. However, these will stay online for a while longer and can be viewd at http://www.broadband-help.com/community.asp
