(SKY)

I'm having problems where I'm only getting 0.3 meg speeds and get disconnected sometimes.

We have totally replaced the router & filters. The router is plugged directly into the master test socket.

We called SKY who couldn't do anything at their end so they sent a BT engineer. The BT engineer said the line is testing ok and we should call SKY back up to request a stable speed of 1 meg.

So we called SKY backup, they said the BT engineer didn't file a proper report with them so they have escalated the matter and said they would send another engineer at the weekend.

I've tried turning the sky box off and testing the noise levels using routerstats, there was no change.

Did the same with the phones, turned them off with the power switch and removed the phone cable from the filter, there was also no change. The extention phones don't ring upstairs when plugged into the master socket which I believe is correct.

My sister who lives just round the corner in Blackburn gets speeds of 6.2 meg.

Here's my stats I got from the router;

Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
WAN PPPoA 0 0 0 0 0 0:00:00
LAN 15 0 0 0 0 0:01:40
WLAN 795 699 0 191 175 0:01:13
ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 249 kbps 230 kbps
Line Attenuation 58.5 db 35.7 db
Noise Margin 7.4 db 9.0 db

I should be getting a sync speed of 3Meg with that attenuation, my line length is about 4km to the exchange.

After reading into it, it seems my Noise Margin should be higher?? Apparently they can make this higher to reduce speeds/get more stable connection and make this lower to increase speeds/less stable line.

However, you can't really reduce my SNR any more? Any ideas on how to improve the SNR? Is this a fault in the local BT exchange or something?

IP of access point, to get settings

I have a DIR-615 connected to my DSL-2640R, (so i can log onto xbox live using my n type wireless adapter for my xbox), the latter has an ip of http://192.168.1.1, so I can check the settings with that, how do I check the settings of the DIR-615? BT say there is no fault so i'm not sure what else there is to do.
Changing the filter and buying the BT iplate seemed to fix the problem at first, but by the evening it had returned again, almost like the filters were no longer effective.

I have no idea what is causing this and hoping someone has some other ideas.

The problem is causing me a low sync speed and the connection to keep dropping. So it is as if none of the filters are working.

Best Regards,

David.

Downloading issues! Interesting problem...

Any help much appreciated.

This is a bit of a hardcore hardware issue and several people in the know about computer stuff have scratched their heads so far!

Context:
I live in the countryside and due to distance from the exchange get a very poor broadband speed. Pre problems it was approx 40kb/s down and up. Since problems, I'm getting limited to 15kb/s down, and 40-45kb/s up!

I think noise margin might be the problem, as it is currently at zero down. Anyway, I'll stick a little table in of router diagnostics, they make little sense to me but I was hoping someone on here might be able to point at the problem. (Surely if I can upload faster than down, there must be something I can do to make it go back to how it was! The line is obviously capable of a higher speed...)

Data Rate
Stream Type Actual Data Rate

Up Stream------- 448 (Kbps.)
Down Stream ----	160 (Kbps.)

Operation Data
Operation Data Upstream Downstream
Noise Margin ---	10 dB 0 dB
Attenuation 63 dB 63 dB

Defect Indication
Indicator Name--------Near End Indicator-------Far End Indicator

Fast Path FEC
Correction -----------------0 ----------------0

Interleaved Path
FEC Correction -----------23392-----------------2711115

Fast Path CRC Error ------0 ----------------0

Interleaved Path
CRC Error--------------------529 ----------------72200

Loss of Signal Defect ------62 ----------------NA

Fast Path HEC Error -------0 ----------------0

Interleaved Path
HEC Error---------------------408 -----------------0

Does it look like this might be a faulty microfilter problem? Or is the provider trying to give me too much speed and the noise margin can't handle it?
Sometimes the walkabout phone we have will cut the connection - probably a noise margin issue?!
The weird thing is that this problem occured, so I rang up my provider, BT, and they did a line check and said it all appeared fine. A day later, it worked and was back to normal, then a day after that it was gone again... and has not worked properly since.

Despite getting 15kb/s down, it seems to have so many errors that many pages won't load, even though they should do as it's not *that* slow (when it works). It's not so intermittent as to keep cutting out, and generally stays on for a good few hours before going off and coming back again without needing a re-boot or anything.

After the initial problem and talking to the ISP, I rebooted the router, re-entered all the details and did a firmware upgrade. (the latest upgrade is still not that recent..)

It's a 3com 11g wireless router.

model number: 3CRWDR100A-72

software version: 2.06T13 (Apr 25 2007 17:06:30)

Really not sure where to go with this - next door has an ok connection through the same ISP and seemingly has no problems, so it must just be this house/router/microfilter. If any of those details throw up something which seems like it is obviously the problem please let me know!! Would really, really appreciate it as the internet is my only way to communicate with the outside world in this desolate location!

Multiple ADSL Modems - Line Noise

I have an issue whereby a friend of mine uses Tiscali broadband with a BT phone service.

BT line tests show nothing. To cut a long story short, I have been with AOL for about 8 months now. I have the up to 8meg speed. I was getting around 3meg download speed, which was ok.

I then had to move back in with the parents. They had Tiscali. I think it was up to 1 meg download. We cancelled Tiscali and moved my AOL account over.

But for some reason, I cannot get more than 1 meg download. The house is only about 300 yards away from my old house, so its not further from the exchange.

I spoke to AOL and they said that BT have a 1meg cap on out BT line and there isn't anything they can do.

I spoke to BT and they said its nothing to do with them as AOL are our ISP.

Does anyone know who is telling porkies and if I can do anything to get the cap removed?

Cheers.

Christian

Authentication "captured" by telephone line?

Can a telephone line "capture" a MoDem's settings?

I ask this because a friend was unable to get their wireless MoDem/Router to authenticate with their ISP.

As we share the same ISP, I set the Router up to their account specs on my phone line (i.e. using their username and password) and it worked perfectly.

I then returned the Router but it still would not work and when I contacted the ISP "support" guys, I was told that my telephone line had now "captured" my friends authentication details and we would have to wait for their "Broadband Department" to release it (this was Friday evening and - you've guessed it - their Broadband Department don't work evenings or weekends, so we'll have to wait until Monday at the earliest for help.

I now have a situation whereby I can access the Internet from my house using either my own or my friends' authentication details at will, yet I cannot connect using either from their house.

Any qualified help would be gratefully received as, over the years, I've performed this service for many, many people without problems (inasmuch that, in the interests of isolating the possibility that their line is at fault, I've set up THEIR MoDem using THEIR details on MY telephone line). I've never, ever had this problem before and suspect our ISP support dept of being a tad "disingenuous" & unhelpful (which is unforgiveable) or ignorantly spouting psychobabble FUD - Fear, Uncertainty & Doubt - (which is the most likely).

If, as they say, my telephone line has captured their authentication settings, how is it that I can still use my own authentication on the same line and my authentication will not work on their line?

169 IP Address keeps appearing

I have a Local Area Connection network consisting of two computers and xbox 360. His system is quite old, has no ethernet connection and USB 1.1 only. They have sent the required USB modem, a Speedtouch USB.

This problem has been taken to "Level 3" in Tiscali, whatever that means, and they can't help. So I'm appealing to you guys for help.

What is happening is this : Install the software, plug in the modem at the appropriate time, install finishes, connect to BB.. all is great. Speedtest.net gives a average of 3.7 on a 4.0 Mb line. Everything works fine just as expected.

Then you switch the computer off. On restart the connection will fail with a "cannot connect to remote computer" error (721 I think). The Tiscali diagnostic program shows data being sent but none being recieved. I have checked Windows Firewall, it is OFF, I even tried with Sygate firewall uninstalled and the AVG uninstalled.

I have now even tried a complete reformat/reinstall of Windows XP SP3, and not installed a firewall/antivirus, same thing happens.

He now has Sygate firewall and AVG antivirus on and to connect he is doing the following: Uninstall USB modem software. Shutdown Computer. When system next required, start computer. Install Tiscali. Now it's a lottery as to whether my internet stays on. My computer connects fine with the modem, but every so often the ADSL unsynchronizes from the modem causing my internet to fail me.

Now this wouldn't be a problem if it was really once every so often, or even if it was once a day. But it can be anything up to 20 times a day, or it can be perfect.

Another issue I have is I used to be able to play on my PS3 online whenever I pleased. Since we changed (this is going back to about last March) I haven't been able to play anything at all except I bought FIFA 09 yesterday and that works on the internet perfectly. Pro Evo 2009 however, or anything I have, does not. Pro Evo at least is specific in the fact that it cannot connect to port 3658 (which I opened) then it still wouldn't connect and ranted about lots of other things.

TLR, my internet crashes often and I'm looking for some suggestions that could maybe prolong my life expectancy before I erupt with rage. Here's the deal...

What's happening?
We've noticed that some customers are using the Belkin wireless G Router (F5D7230 v7xxx) - which looks a bit like the picture to the right. belkin router pic

There's a glitch with this model of router, which is slowing down your service and causing some issues with our network. We think you're using this kind of router, so you're not getting the broadband speeds you should be getting...."

*****

It went on to give a link to the Belkin webite and instructions on how to do a firmware upgrade. Naturally I couldn't do a firmware upgrade as I don't have the Belkin G router, and my N1 router has the latest firmware already.

The link to belkin was the only internet address I could reach, and all other attempts to access the internet were blocked.

I called the Virgin broadband helpline and they knew nothing about this message and could only suggest I disconnect my router.

Has anyone else encountered this issue?

Cheers,

Help for a friend

Hey All,

Hopefully someone can help. This happens with each of there software, but what is odd is that it does not happen simultaneously, rather it happens at random times i.e. one minute my friend is logged off automatically but no one else is, next minute another user in the house is but my friend isnt.

Does anyone know what could be the problem? Tiscali always try our best to provide the maximum possible speed to our customer, however factors like distance from your local exchange and line quality, affect our ability to provide you with a good quality broadband service.

However, I request you to let us know the speed you are experiencing so that I can forward it to the second level support with high priority and assure you that our engineers will solve the issue.

However, for any Billing queries, I request you to contact the Billing department as they are in a better position to help you.

You can contact Billing department at 08712223311, option 2 [calls charged at National Rate] (Lines are open from 8 am to midnight, 7 days a week).

For further assistance, please don't hesitate to contact us.

Regards,

Tiscali Technical Support

WHY the hell should i sort it out by ringing a national rate number!

so i just said with another email sayingim going to be stopping payment on the 30th of July am i right doing that? what else shoulg i do i live in uk.

AND THE ISP IS KILL----> TISCALI! <---DIE

Odd speed problem

I have AOL (yuck I know) 8Mbit, but I currently live about 4km away from the exchange. I have also tried disconnecting all other phone equipment and swapping the ADSL filter on my router to make sure a faulty filter wasn't causing the problem.

I have done MANY speed tests and all come out with a connection speed of ~160 Kbps, even though my router still thinks I am connected at full speed.

The wireless on my router is disabled and I have a fresh install of windows running.

I am fresh out of ideas as to what could be causing this, so I thought I would pass it on to a community with a greater intellect.

Any help is greatly appreciated.
Muffinman.

Bulldog Broadband Installation CD

Anyone still have their's?

I don't! How hard could it be?

After 16 (seriously) phone calls to BT to get the line 'reconnected', even though they disconnected it in between the month the previous tenants left, for no reason, we eventually had a working phone line (which then then tried to charge us £350 for leaving our contract early and installing a new line... unbelievable). Our phone number changed when a 'technician' came round and said he had to 'go under ground' to reconnect the line. It hadn't actually been physically disconnected as the phone line ran to the pole, but it sounded like he couldn't be assed to do it. Some days later another technician showed up who actually got our phone line working.

We looked around and found the Virgin Media Max ADSL 8mb offer. It was a 'free' wireless router, 'free' anytime calls to a UK landline and an unlimited* download service. They quoted that we could receive 4mb from the email they sent. We were happy with this, so we placed our order. Afterwards I would find out that we are 870m from the exchange.

This is when the broadband problems started. After the line was activated, during the 10 day testing stage our router would continually disconnect and struggle to reconnect. After 10 days, it was terribly slow - around 0.1 to 0.3mb - but our router was connected at about 2.5mb.

I then called customer support, who were useless and I had to pay 10p a min for the privledge. The only suggestion was to call tech support, at 35p a min with a 10p connection charge. Essentially, I had to pay for something that they had broken. Tech support were then equally clueless. I eventually worked out that our phone line might be faulty - so I took the BT tech gamble (that is, if your equipment is at fault, you get billed around £220, if its BT's fault, its free). It turns out that our line was running through some leaves, and we had a new master socket fitted and a brand new line installed.

However, nothing improved. This was because the line sychronisation occured on a faulty line, reporting it back to the exchange as being 0.5mb. After a ridiculous amount of calls to Virgin, they finally worked out that they needed to resync the line. After this I could then connect at around 4mb. Our connection was better, but still awful.

After £50 worth of calls to tech support, they were still completely clueless, and simply informed me that my line can only handle 0.5mbps. I mentioned that I was quoted 4mb, but they said that it was a post code checker, and not an individual line test.

Can you believe they sold me an 8mb service when they knew i could only get 0.5?

Eventually, after the new line went in our speeds improved - up to around 4mb during the day, but the test was erratic. It went steadily up, and then back down to around 2mb. Now, we get around 1.5mb to 2.5mb during the weekday and around 0.1 to 0.5 over the weekend. However, the connection is extremely erratic - websites appear not to be there until refreshing when it will eventually 'find' the site again. This was, so I was told by a senior technician, that the service was oversubscribed and too many people were using it. Thanks for letting me know, Virgin!

However, the plot thickens when another guy told me to ignore the 0.5mb quote as BT will update my details at the exchange soon. After 4 months, it still says we can only get 0.5, even though our IP profile is now set to 2.5mb and our router stays on at about 3.5 if it's been on for a few weeks. If I power it down just once, Virgin cans the connection down to 2.0mb which then slowly builds up again.

All this information has been accumulated by calling Virgin and BT for hours and wasting even more hours providing my own tech support for a broken service.

The final straw came when I managed to download a couple of game demos on the xbox live service. Our connection was shit-canned down to 0.1 and I thought our line had been damaged. It took three phone calls to tech support until some arrogant jobsworth chastised me for download 5gb of data (on my awful connection) and told me I'd been put on a cap list - limiting my service to 0.5mb. When I said I can barely get 1, and it's erratic, he explained 'yeah, that happens sometimes'.

When you read 'unlimited' on the Virgin website, actually read 'about 5gb data limit a week' or simply 'not unlimited' or 'we're greedy liars'.

Our connection is still terrible after 4 months. I've noticed some hiss on the line, but I'm not sure I want to gamble £250 in case it turns out to be working within limits or an equipment fault.

Here are some conclusions I've drawn:

* Virgin Media is over subscribed on the ADSL service- expect shit speeds.
* Customer service are useless and downright rude. Their aim is to put barriers in between you and achieving your goal in order to save money. Wait for the 'we can't do anything unless tech support have left a note on the system' chestnut for ultimate buerocratic confusion.
* Technical support contradict each other depending on who you speak to. Mostly rude, but a few people there do have their sense of humanity intact. Others are moral wreckages.
* After listening to the 'Hey, you' when you call and their falsified 'zany' crazy hip music for the 50th time, you'll begin to suspect they spend more money on crap ads with Uma Thurman than actually providing a good service.

If you've managed to get this far, then thanks a lot. Do you think I should get BT over (again) to check if my line is knackered or do they think I lucked out on the infrastructure and can only ever get 0.5mb? I can hear some hissing again when I make a phone call (on a wired phone), and do you think that doing a line test on a broken line reported back a reading to the exchange that should now be fixed since the new line went in? Do you think its Virgin's fault?

Thanks again, and I really hope you guys can help.

Dr Speedtouch problem Checking SNR,

Have been on pipex solo i meg for a year now.

going adsl max next,

Have tried to test the SNR
With DR Speedtouch Diagnostics
But Get this error
A Problem is detected to the internet

Anyone know how to solve this
I have a speedtouch 330

Tiscali...cannot connect to server

I have a wireless BT Voyager 2100 connection toTiscali Broadband.
Recently both myself and my daughter who has the same connection on her computer keep llosing our connection to the internet with the message "cannot connect to server". Internet doesn't work but stays connected

Hi guys, hope you can help

About two years i had a LAN network connection in my universities halls of residence, which worked fine - plug in the ethernet cable and away you go!

I then moved in with my (ex)wife and got an ADSL connection with POipex UK via a modem etc. Thats when this problem started.

It worked fine until i updated avast anti-virus home edition and zone-alarm pro. Then when i rebooted the computer it just stopped dead! I mean nothing, internet said it was connected yet 'problem loading page' all the way. I panicked and just set up my ex's computer on the internet and left mine upstairs. For two years.

The computer works ok so i'm certain there is not physical problem and it can;t be the ethernet adaptor because that worked prior to the ADSL cock-up.

I had Virgin Broadband installed yesterday (via ethernet cable modem) and i am having the same problem. I can ping my own address, i can ping www.google.com and various others and my ipconfig /all also gives me the response that everything is fine. My connection settings are set to automatic AND they match the ipconfig /all results to the letter.

I even booted up in safe mode and it STILL wouldn't connect. I have uninstalled all my anti-virus and firewall software (risky i know) and still nothing. It doesn't let any of my internet programs connect either (MSN Messenger, Soulseek, Limewire).

There are a couple of things i have noticed though:

- One day my PC randomly deleted MSPaint and Internet Explorer which i re-installed yesterday.
- Whenever i try and open Windows Firewall it won't let me, it gives the error message that it cannot start.

I am at my wits end, i have all of my data backed up to DVD's and am just waiting on a copy of XP before i format the thing and start afresh but if you guys can help me before i resort to that i'd be well grateful, i'll even buy you a cuppa tea!

cheers

Help with Sky Broadband

Hello,

We have just got a new pc and we have just signed up with Sky Broadband. The TalkTalk on the other hand is very quick doing the test below was instant response.

Router configured with correct username/password btw.

The problem: When opening a browser and typing www.google.com the return is instant. When searching for the BBC the return is instant. When clicking on the BBC link it is slow but eventually comes up 10-20s delay. When trying to get to the sport page it might take 30s+ it at all to get there.

The customer uses MSN's live email. Again the initial login screen is quick but when trying to login it is slow. When their email page eventually show it is slow, I'm talking dial-up.

Here are some stats:
TalkTalk SMART MT882

Type: ADSL2
Bandwidth Down/Up: 6059 / 925
SNR Down/UP: 6.0 / 6.0
Attenuation Down/Up: 46.5 / 27.0
CRC Down/Up: 0/1

WAN = PVC-0
VCPI = 0/38
PPPoA
VC-Mux
Default Route = Enabled
IGMP = Disabled
Configured MTU = 1432

IP Routes
66.24.232.134
66.24.232.135
78.149.192.1
79.149.205.238

Dynamode R-ADSL-C4-W-G1 - Second reading after a reboot of router in ()

Type: ADSL2
Bandwidth Down/Up: 4972 / 1019 (6226 / 1017)
SNR Down/UP: 6.0 / 5.6 (6.3 / 6.3)
Attenuation Down/Up: 47.5 / 25.7 (47.5 / 25.8)
Attenuation Rate Down/Up: 5736 / 1016 (7296 / 1040)
Output Down/Up: 12.9 / 0.0 (12.9/0.0)

VCPI = 0/38
PPPoA
VC-Mux

Gateway = 98.241.0.1

IP Routes
P-DNS 62.24.252.134 | 223
S-DNS 62.24.252.135 | 222

MTU = Unfortunately I cannot see this setting in this routers firmware so cannot confirm this setting !!

To me the figures between the two look similar but I'm no expert hence this post. I've just moved to a new house and the area has Virgin cable so we decided to go with that for our broadband.

When I plug my laptop into it I can't access any web sites using normal URL addresses and after about 45 minutes on the phone to virgin technical help we found that it does connect if I put the IP address of any site. (Great, I thought, this lovely Virgin person will soon have this fixed and I'll be on my way) Then the lovely Virgin tells me that it's not a problem with their connection or service it's a problem with my computer/DNS servers. So I need to get an IT expert to fix it for me. Grrrr.

I can connect to any other network (ie. my parent's, my work one and a friend of mine) and use URL addresses fine so I'm thinking it must be a Virgin problem so if anyone could give me some help it would be much appreciated, even something to back to Virgin with would be good.

I've used ipconfig /flushdns and it still does nothing and I've tried changing the dns server to 4.2.2.4

To prove the Laptop works I'm on it now at work.

Thanks in advance.

Poor Virgin ADSL Speeds

When I first had broadband installed in this house the phone line was in someone elses name and we were getting the 1mb connection that we were paying for

That person moved out and i had a new phone line put in, in my name and since then we now only get a 512kb connection on a good day

I put this down to a poorly routed line from BT (as thats what virgin told me) and the line attenuation supported this (as its 60.5db)

However, last night i was lookin at a site that said that for a line attenuation of 60 i should be getting a 1.5mb connection (or upto)

and when i do a speed test, i use the london server (as its recommended) and the site tells me that i am in fact less than 50miles away from london, when i live near liverpool over 200 miles away from london

would this be causing me speed problems as i dont fully understand the technical details of broadband internet

Sky Broadband log in problems

Hi

Is anyone else having problems logging into Sky broadband?
