I was thinking it would be worthwhile, especially for VOIP usage, as if your power goes out, then you also lose your phone service.

Any recommendations would be appreciated. I probably am not looking for a long-term generator, I am more interested in surviving the shorter outages.

Buying Your Own Cable/ADSL Modem

I think most services and providers either sell you or provide you with a modem to work with their particular service. That being said you can still find stand-alone modems out there for a lot of different services, and many router/adsl modem combos out there that work with specific services like BT.

Is there any benefit for not using the standard modem that comes from your provider?
Software Firewalls

There are a lot of firewalls out there and I have tried out most of them. (Software firewalls that is.) Currently I am fighting with Norton Firewall. The problem I have with any Norton products is they are extremely bloated and tend to eat up memory and slow down my computer.

So has anyone found a nice software firewall that does not eat up memory and slow down their pc?
