However, as I was paying £25 a month for a 1mbps connection, I figured I'd asked them to upgrade my account, which they did to 8mps via my BT line. Now, however, I seem to be getting connections of anywhere in between 152kbps and 312kbps. I have done tests on my line and discovered that the maximum my BT line will allow is 1.5mbps.

Understandably, I'm a bit miffed at this, because not only is my connection treacle slow, but it often disconnects. Hell, my upload speed peaks at 317Kbps, which surely can't be right, can it?

Can anyone recommend any better Broadband providers, as obviously I've just about had it with AOL? If I move to Virgin Media I assume I'll be able to run that through the fibre optic cable I already have running into the house, but will this guarantee me better speeds (the PR bumf I've heard from Virgin in that with cable it doesn't matter how far away from the exchange you are because you're not sharing the line, which I'm dubious about)?

Surely I must be able to find Broadband out there that will offer speeds faster than the ones I'm getting? I'm not exactly out in the sticks where I am, so it can't be that hard to get a decent connection can it?

Any recommendations? Thanks in advance.

Is this really the fastest speed I can get?

Okay so I'm moving house soon, and basically I checked out what kind of internet speed I could get.

I'm currently on Virgin Media with a 2Mb line (About 250kbps download).

Virgin Media's site said that I wasn't able to get fibre optic, but could get 'Up to 20Mb' over a telephone line, but that could be 1kbps for all I know, so that's not a good indication, BT threw up this message:

Your exchange is ADSL enabled, and our initial check on your postcode indicates that it is VERY UNLIKELY you will be able to receive fixed 512Kbps or 256Kbps broadband service due to the very long length of your telephone line. However, your order will be accepted if you still wish to order. An engineer may need to visit who will, where possible, supply the broadband service.

So does that mean that the best I can get is 256kbps? Like I said, I'm on 2Mb right now and sometimes I find it pretty slow. 256kbps will be unlivable for me. I can't live without a good internet speed seeing as I don't watch TV or anything else.

What speed can I expect? What should I do? I'm not going to be staying there until 2012 or something so unless a line upgrade is immediate, it's no good to me.

Thanks in advance.

::Start your own Calling cards, pc2phone, Resellerships, callback, callshop business::

Dear Friends:

Want to setup VoIP company, a business under your own brand name? At worst its been 517mb hardly broadband. Sky says that BT have checked my line whilst not entering my house. They say that I should be able to get 5888 or thereabouts! I have just checked it and got just under 2! So I rang Sky AGAIN and a nice Irish guy got me to check the router with the 198 url and that came up with the 5888. He told me that as BT had checked my line it was definitely something wrong with my computer/router/wireing. I said the I very much doubted that and he reluctantly agreed to check further. He got me to check something in the Command Prompt which came up with ( he said) 7 active connections and this was my problem. He advised me to take it to a technically competent person who could sort it for me. He also said the my MacAfee antivirus was not the best, he had had it and it had ‘let viruses’ etc through so check my computer with some good anti spy ware.
I am using a Toshiba ( I know!!! But it is a works comp!) with Vista AMD64 AthalonX2
Doesn’t seem to make much difference if it’s wireless or wired. My router is straight into the BT socket ( think its called the test socket, I have the front of the box off ) with no extensions.
The router is the one supplied by Sky, Netgear
Hope you can help advise
Cheers, Pete

need advice on new isp

hi everyone
i am in the process of moving from talktalk to another isp, the 3 i have sort of narrowed it down to are o2 ,plusnet and madasafish. Winners included O2 as the fastest broadband provider, BT as the winner in the wireless broadband category and ‘3' won the award for best mobile broadband provider.

The awards closely analysed data captured in over 310,000 speed tests that were carried out on the Top 10 Broadband site and offer recognition to broadband providers that have achieved excellence in their field. UK broadband providers had their services rigorously tested against a wide range of criteria that included fastest broadband, customer satisfaction and best broadband bundle.

O2 wins the Fastest Broadband and Customer Satisfaction awards, with an average download speed of 6.128Mb and customer rating of 3.84 out of 5. It is best for providing UK consumers, who are regularly downloading and streaming live video and gaming online, with a fast download speed, which, among other factors, is vital to be able to watch video quickly and successfully without the connection dropping in and out or the download taking a long time.

Flexibility and mobile wireless broadband packages are other features UK broadband customers are looking for as they continue to use broadband on their laptops, and increasingly on their mobiles, to communicate on the move. 3’s victory in the Mobile Broadband category can be attributed to its range of packages with expansive download allowance, laptop deals and hardware options. With mobile broadband sales increasing by 50% month-on-month this is the fastest-moving and most progressive sector of the broadband market.

The Wireless Broadband award went to BT because of the fact that its HomeHub 2.0 device doubles the wireless reach and facilitates digital TV via BT Vision.

“The winners of the Top 10 Broadband awards have distinguished themselves in the UK broadband market by offering first-class packages tailored to niche areas of the market,” says Jessica McArdle, Web Editor at Top10-Broadband.co.uk.

Customer reviews and specific package offerings including price, download allowance, contract length and speed of over 120 broadband packages were also judged by the Top 10 Broadband team.

“The Top 10 Broadband awards amount to a comprehensive guide to the best broadband packages on the market allowing the public to make informed buying decisions,” says McArdle.

The Top 10 Broadband Awards and winners:

Award
Winner

Fastest Broadband
O2

Customer Satisfaction
O2

Mobile Broadband
3

Wireless Broadband
BT

Broadband Bundle
Virgin Media

Value Broadband
TalkTalk

Short-Contract Broadband
AOL Broadband

Small ISP
PlusNet

Gaming Broadband
Be

Student Broadband
Vodafone

Looking for a new provider

After reading some of the posts I am a bit confused as to whom to move my broadband to. I am currently with Pipex. I hate they way they are now bandwith throttling on p2p. I am not constant/heavy downloader so I object to having my p2p capped at 20K a second. I also don't like the way they don't pass on savings to customers. New customers can get an up to 8 meg connection for £24.99 a month. I pay £33.99 a month for a 2 meg connection.

Is there an ISP left that does not do bandwith throttling, traffic shaping, port blocking etc and also offer unlimited download usage? I am looking to pay up to £40 a month. I am sure people will wonder why I want unlimited download when I am not heavy downloader. I simply object to having limits placed on me.

If I do have to go with a provider that has download limits which is the best? Again although I am accepting download limits I still don't want any sort of bandwith throttling, traffic shaping, port blocking.

Basically I want to be able to enjoy the speed I pay for.
Getting MAC from Pipex

Big hi from the newbie!

Ok, so I have decided to drop Pipex as the service has just got worse and worse. I've bought a simple ADSL Router and leads and I'm trying to get it set up with my exisiting machine, ready for the addition of the new one. Is this incorrect or does it not matter?

At the moment, I cannot get the exisiting computer to recognise an internet connection from the router (which is supposed to maintain it full time?)

The ADSL light is on steady however the setup instructions ask me to open an internet explorer window and type in 192.168.1.1. BT, In and effort to resolve this situation, until a long term solution for TPON customers is available, has a limited copper wire programme to overlay TPON with copper in area's which are technically and commercially viable for upgrade. In order for TPON orders to progress for review and possible conversion over to copper, changes to systems and progresses were completed in July 2003 and after completing and initial trial period are now in place"

Our village can now receive broadband but as our property has a fibre optic cable BT are telling me i cannot receive it.
