I have AOL (yuck I know) 8Mbit, but I currently live about 4km away from the exchange. I signed up to this knowing full well that I would only be able to get at best something in the region of 4.5 Mbps connection speeds. The first couple of months worked fine with no problems and consistently achieving ~4 Mbps connection speeds, now suddenly the download speeds have dropped from these fast speeds to just 160 Kbps!

The really odd thing is that the router (DG834G) still states I am connected at ~4 Mbps, and my SNR and attenuation have not changed at all.

I have my router plugged into my BT master socket and I have all other phone equipment filtered in my house. I have also tried disconnecting all other phone equipment and swapping the ADSL filter on my router to make sure a faulty filter wasn't causing the problem.

I have done MANY speed tests and all come out with a connection speed of ~160 Kbps, even though my router still thinks I am connected at full speed.

The wireless on my router is disabled and I have a fresh install of windows running.

I am fresh out of ideas as to what could be causing this, so I thought I would pass it on to a community with a greater intellect.

Any help is greatly appreciated.
Muffinman.

hi

I was with AOL for 2 years and they were very stable @ 4Mb.. THEN
they applied the now FAIR USAGE POLICY into the T&C and my heavy usage (as it was suposed to be an unlimited connection) put me into the FUP group (without ANY notification from AOL) and what happens is between 6pm-10.30/11.00pm Sun-Fri they slowed my line down to 400Kbps....

Now yours sounds as if it MAY be under FUP... do you download during peak times a lot?...
try the speedtests during the day.. morning / 11am(ish) or 2am-6am is a good time for non-busy lines....

I know your router says 4000K , that doesnt change... The ISP can limit the actually bandwidth coming through , what your seeing in your router is the connection rate...

Try the tests at other times....
ask AOL if you are on FUP....

then post back here....

I could be under your FUP you are having a limit imposed and it also could be a BT Bras profile flip.

You need to ask AOL whether you are a BT IPStream customer or an LLU customer. If you are IPStream then it is pretty likely your BRas profile has flipped (160k is the lowest speed) which will require a line train kicking off to reset it.

Hi. I'm new to this but after over 3 weeks without internet and trying to run a business I thought talking to some of you guys might really help! Overnight my connection stopped working but have had BT engineer say that he thinks it's down to Tiscali (I don't deal with them as I have a business account through Cobweb Solutions but it comes back to them anyway!) Looking at the chat before this I think mine is a similar problem. Both my router and the BT engineer are showing a speed of only 192kBps.

I'm slightly techy but not very so any advice on how to communicate what I think is the problem would be greatly appreciated.

Muffinman:

Since your Sync speed with the local exchange is showing as 4.5Mb/s it is likely to be a bottleneck created either on AOL's network or a Wholesale circuit provided for AOL, It is worth enquiring the status of your Fair usage Policy with AOL tech support, they should have records of whether you have breached the FUP and give you more info regarding this.

--------------------------------------------------

Scotland tiger:

From my dealings with Tiscali resale, you can either have a DSLAM at the exchange owned by tiscali (LLU) which offers a lot of control for ISP's to limit profiles, deactiate ports and increase SNR through different line profiles.

Or you will have a DSLAM owned by BT with the backhaul heading onto Tiscali's network prior to your ISP's giving less control, and leaving your line at the mercy of BT's Dynamic Line Management system. This is usually referred to as Datastream

If you have an LLU connection and your synchronisation rate / Downstream Line rate is 192k according to the router there is a good chance that you may be on whats known as a diagnostic line profile, which will limit your sync rate to around the number you are describing.
Generally this is used for diagnosing problems such as No Synchronisation to the local exchange or intermittent connection to the local exchange, it may be worth getting in touch with your ISP to see whether they have put you on a line profile such as that for breaching FUP or for diagnosing problems with your Broadband line.

If you have a Datastream connection, since you stated you have had problems with your line for 3 weeks, BT's Dynamic Line management system hay have forcesd your sync rates down in order to combat intermittency on your line, and this can take 3 days to return to normal levels if the line remains stable.

If you have not rebooted the router, it will be worth doing, as some routers may not re-train with the exchange to obtain higher sync rates automatically.

========================

I'll keep racking my brains to think of anything more for both cases, but I hope this bit of information may help

Hello,

If you are under the FUp group you can contact their FUP department and they would remove you from the group as this is only the first time this has happened.

IF you are on the LLU circuit you are in the Bad bay tunnel which will be the reason for your speed slow during peak hours.

For ipstream you know its a BT bras issue.

try and contact your ISP its should happen in couple of days.

Regards,

Brad
