| This is a general enquiry because I am curious as to how it works. As I understand it a BB moden allows signal transmissions for both internet use and telephone conversations. More information gets sent via broad band than with dial up. Is this because there are different types of cables going from telephone exchangers to ISP who provide BB or is there something else which causes it to work?

This is something that I studied at university and it's amazing how much you forget! (I've only noticed this since you asked!)
BT has major control over communications as we all know.
BT's core network infrastructure is digital and carries massive amounts of information (voice and fax calls, commercial data, emails and internet traffic) quickly on optical fibre connections.
Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) technologies increase the speed and volume of information that can be sent to the home or office. This is much faster than the older copper wire technology use of communication.
To understand a little more about communications I would recommend studying basic Computer Networks to get you started.
Hope this has helped at least a little.

I know nothing about how it works but do know my connection is too unreliable. Used to be with Demon - perfect. Now with TalkTalk - nightmare. Phone line is always ok. Have been told endlessly that line is fine. How can I tell ? In the socket there are about 20 wires but only 2 are connected. Is this right? Would a damaged line affect broadband but not phone? It is always bad when rains. Finally I have a Belkin router which I have to reconfigure every week or so - would this be anything to do with the line? If I put another line in how can I be sure it will be any better?
Any ideas,please ?

It sounds like there may be a few problems here...
especially when you mention "its worse when it rains..."
Talk Talk have a bad reputation for poor speeds, my sister and friend are on Talk Talk and get less than 1Mb on an 8Mb line....
after 6months of me pestering them for her I finally got throught to second line support in UK and a nice technician is now helping her out, he says he should be able to get it upto 4Mb though ive a feeling around 2.8Mb will be best he can achieve due to location/distance...
However there are some steps I can help you with to determine a few things....
What sort of speeds do you get? and at what times?
How long have you been with them?
Have the speeds always been that bad? (i expect so...)
What type of belkin router (model)?
You can certainly check the sync rate in your router...
(if you have to re-configure it then it must be configured incorrectly. once you have the correct settings installed then it should never need changing again)
If you PM me i will supply my email address and we can contact each other through email or MSN...?
(I can even help remotely on MSN...)
Your choice....
(I help on a lot of forums and im starting to get so many diff. forums and posts to locate to continue helping it gets annoying)
