I'm on Virgin Media 2MBps (the cheapest M speed, little choice of provider as cable already installed in my rented flat). Apart from other problems with it, I find if I try to stream audio, it starts, then stops after a few seconds as if it's buffering, but then never restarts. My connection isn't fast, but I'd have thought it should be better than this. Is there anything I can do?

What is your stream source? Have you tried a "decent" one such as BBC radio or similar to ensure that it is not your stream source or your client?

Have you tried pausing/unpausing to see if that kick starts things?
