I am on a (supposedly) 8MB connection with Bulldog. For the past month or two my connection speeds have been around 2mb.

I am on a Netgear DG834G (version 3) with firmware version 4.0.1.37.

I checked the router and it reports that it is connected at around 6464 kbps.

However speedtest.net only shows a connection of around 2 _ 3 mb.

If I reboot the router the speedtest usually increases to around 5 / 6 mb but this only lasts a few minutes before slowing down again.

Any ideas?

There are three options (or possibly four) to my mind

1. Bulldog have overloaded gateways and you rebooting gets you onto another temporarily until others do the same

2. You are behing traffic shaping which does not take effect until your connection has been up for a while

3. The NAT table on your router is overflowing due to stacks of inbound connections being initiated due to use of (typically) file sharing software and while you are (maybe) not using it anymore it is not uncommon to see volumes of inbound connections to an IP address months after the user has stopped sharing.

4. Your PC clogged full of spyware that is making outbound connections without your knowledge.

Depending on your level of PC knowledge and "maintenance" I would suggest the most likely affecting order is 4, 2, 3 then 1. The reason I put one last is that I know a good number of Bulldog adsl users who don't seem to have problems. That is not to say that it is the situation in your case, I am just hypothesising the likelihoods.

Regards, Pete

Hello,

The reason that you have issues with your Bulldog connection is that Bulldog leases its lines from Tiscali.

I have come across many bulldog and tiscali users who have this issue.

You would need to wait for 2 weeks at least and the issue would get resolved all by itself.

No use in contacting Bulldog over it.

Regards,

Brad
