I have tried three different phones in the phone socket, socket appears dead, but broadband is ok.

turn the router off for five seconds that’s mains power,let it reset that all ways works with my BT setup

As Harry says, sounds like you’ve got a dis’ fault. That is one leg of your circuit is disconnected. Speech will not work but BB will.
Ring your Service Provider to report a fault.
The Telephone uses a ‘DC’ loop and needs both wires for the loop. Broadband uses high frequency tones, some of which will still get through if one of the two wires is broken. Report the phone as faulty!
