What type of hardware do I need to get a stronger wireless broadband connection?
Question by quornsam: What type of hardware do I need to get a stronger wireless broadband connection?
I am working on a laptop – connected with BT Open World or something along those lines.
I have paid for a months connection as I am not sure how long I will be here.
I am only getting a weak 2 bar signal, can I buy a piece of hrdware that I can get a better and stronger signal with over further range to stop melosing my connection so often.
At the moment I can only get it in one part of my flat, and I have to sit still ith it on my lap to do so.
Please provide details with where I can buy one quickly.
Thank you.
OK, I think you guys ae reading me wrong.
I need a wireless adapter that is stronger. I can get a signal – but one that delivers a further range!
I don’t know if they are legal in the UK.

Linksys has a Range expander that works well. Delivers 54 MBs from a Modem and router… must be all Linksys however, but it might be compatible to other hardware, check with linksys support

i can answer that easy
try to have Microsoft XP I’ve got it and its great! try NTL
not really, all these “Rangemax” devices don’t really improve things.
You can get wireless repeaters -these have a box you plug into a mains socket near your router, and another one in the other room. They cost about £100
Or, you can use powerline, these also plug into the sockets but you have to plug your laptop into it – can be used in any room but its not wireless. about £70 for the pair
Tried many wireless routers including linksys, d-link etc, none work in some parts of our house
Surprised you are having problems in a flat. Our problem is limestone walls. I gues you coudl have granite walls if its an old scottish flat or something ! Some concrete flats have re-enforcing bars that kill the signal too
I have found with my router the higher the better I had the router on the floor and it wasnt to good with signals i then placed it on a high bookcase that the lead allowed and the signal improved ,dont know if your has the aerial antennas but moving them helped too.
oh double check that it is your router and not a open neighbours link as i had a low signal coming from a neighbours just incase thats what it is as well.
