What can I do about my AOL broadband problem?
Question by Claire S: What can I do about my AOL broadband problem?
I’ve not been able to access my internet for the last 4 days, so I rang AOL and asked why. Apparently we’ve exceeded the download limit on our “unlimited” broadband, so our speed has been capped. We should be able to access webpages, just slower, but we cannot. I have spoken to technical support but they can’t help because we don’t use their awful web browser software so they can’t help us!! They can see our router is online, which is great to know (not!) but we cannot download pages at all. We can’t cancel because our 12 month contract doesn’t end until January, and apparently they won’t put up our speeds again until we go under the limit and they’ve reactivated our account, which could be 2 months or more!
Anyone have any ideas what’s up/any loop holes I can use to make them put our speed or?
Otherwise, anyone recommend a good broadband provider to contact in January?
P.S. DON’T USE AOL PEOPLE!
Apparently the 60GB usage limit was in the small print but it is surely false advertising?
I don’t use wireless, it is all wired up so no chance anyone is stealing my bandwidth!
Also, I DON’T CURRENTLY USE THE AOL BROWSER. I use Firefox!

AOL is rubbish i changed to sky main because it was free but ive not had any trouble with it so far.
i would check the AOL contract, you say you have unlimited access yet they have limited you a good case to void the contract if you ask me…..
you could also try restarting your router or modem or setting it back to factory default and putting the settings back in again, also if using IE7 try uninstalling it and reinstalling it i did have a similar problem with IE7 not showing webpages and good test to see if your connected is go to the command prompt and type in “ping www.yahoo.co.uk” and if you get a reply its your pc stoping your from viewing the pages.
What do you think? Answer below!
getting v similar problems as others. Broadband speed 100kbps at best should be getting 6mb. 2 months of Indian call centres, testing, re testing, engineer visits, new router and still same problem. Now told today by Chief Executives office they are washing their hands of my problem and will release me from my contract.
When asked why “it could cost us £ millions to resolve”
Why millions
“don’t know as BT have confirmed your line is fine”
crap crap crap
i am an 80 year old man and getting a bit muddled. i have now been trying to get hold of talk talk for 3 days now, they asked for a broadband no never had one then my tel no and tell me they cant find it. i only have a computer but its over £30 a month. who rips who off
I am in the same situation. I am paying for up to 8mb broadband from aol, and was told that I could only recieve 2mb, but I am only getting 0.4mb or less some days, it is terrible.
AOL will not help, I keep having to do test after test when I call up and nothing ever works. Aol keep blaming the router and sending new ones out to me but the problem still persists.
I have been told if I cancel I will have a £250 fine.
AOL are an absolute sham of a company, don’t go near them people. I have had awful experiences with them and waiting it out to cancel the contract, but I am sooooo angry with them, the service is non existant.
I am concerned that the agreed cost of my AOL broadband and line rental has increased from the agreed amount without an agreement. I have tried unsuccessfully to get into my account several times to be told it is temporarily unavailable. I have asked on several occasions that my landline should not be x directory
Your stuck with the issue just keep calling them and hassling them on the phone. They wouldnt give you a mac code even if you wanted to change.
in the past i was with aol for years and in the end i found out they were really crap, there customer support is just rubbish, i dont do indian call centres at all, if they put you through to india ask to be put through to the ireland department or get the unofficial numbers from http://www.nomore0870.com.
Then i tried talk talk and found out they were the worst company in the world, for not doing what was needed, lying ont he phone on hold for hours, the lot.
I went to bt and i love them no probelm at all and thier customer service is here in the UK and there service is well established so less problems.
Good Luck- Its a mission trying to sort these kinds of stuff out
Just to confuse the issue a bit more!
I was with BT broadband , I read a few reports (on this very forum) that were telling me and others ‘Talk Talk’ were a load of rubbish. OK I took their word for that!
A few weeks later I had one of those phone calls out of the blue asking if I had ever thought of going through them for broad band ?
I would normally have just put the phone down, but said I had read a lot of adverse comments ref ‘Talk Talk’ I may have even gone over the top a bit!!
The feller on the phone told me they had now bought out AOL, there were a few minor problems still to sort out , but they were intent upon getting a good customer relationship going, no matter what the cost, he then outlined the financial details, what it would save me in bills etc.
I had a couple of problems on the initial change over from BT to ‘Talk Talk’ but all sorted out now, I have also received my combined phone line rental and broadband costs and they were telling the truth , it is a lot cheaper!
My suggestion is that you contact the new owner of AOL and speak to them about your problem, they want a good customer realationship!!
Good luck.
I have worked on PC of people who use AOL, and I wouldn’t let that pile of cr@p anywhere near my PC.
I thought their broadband was supposed to be unlimited. If this is what you signed up for, then you have every right to get out of your contract (they have not met their part of the contract)
O have heard that getting away from AOL is like trying to break out of Colditz, but, persevere. you will find your PC runs much better without their bloatware all over it.
I am on NTL cable broadband, which suits me fine.
If you want to keep your BT line, then I am sure someone will be along shortly to recommend another broadband provider
im with bt no problems i have heard
a lot of bad news about AOL
