We are on 8meg broadband but only getting 0.7megs, is there any chance the 3 year old router could be knacked?
Question by tech guy: We are on 8meg broadband but only getting 0.7megs, is there any chance the 3 year old router could be knacked?
We are with orange and over the last 3 years have used the same Netgear router and have been getting 8meg broadband fine. Suddenly over the past 4 days we have only been getting 0.7 megs and i phoned orange and they said they are still providing 8megs. Is there any chance our 3 year old Router could of had enough and given up?

8Megabits sounds about right, but how about the 0.7… is that megaBITS or megaBYTES? Because that’s a huge difference. 8 megaBITs = 1 megaBYTE (which is surprisingly close to 0.7).

i doubt it could be the router.. theres many factors u have to consider.. one is what time of the day u check ur download speed cos of the internet traffic.. plus how far u are from ur telephone exchanxe.. plus if its a wireless one can somebody else be using ur connecting and killing ur bandwith?
and also do u have any backgorund downlods going on… u can try changing the router see if it makes any differnce..
good luck and all the best
It doesn’t sound like a faulty router. Have you made any changes to your system or the settings?
If the speed has definitely changed then first of all phone Orange again and ask them to check the line or ask them to request a line check of whoever they are using (e.g. BT in the UK) to connect to you.
Another thing you can try is, if you are using a Windows system (there will be an equivalent for other systems), open a command prompt window and type in ‘tracert http://www.bbc.co.uk‘ without the inverted commas. That might identify which connection is slow. You can use tracert (traceroute) to check the connection between your computer and the router and then from your computer to the Orange server and then from your computer to some other site e.g. the BBC or Google.

Try moving/replacing the filters , the one your router is connected to may well be faulty
