using a router from one company with broadband from another?
Question by catfra: using a router from one company with broadband from another?
I have broadband from Pipex and a speedtouch router which doesn’t pick up my laptop wirelessly. Can I use a router from 02 which I have been given even though it doesn’t have the setup cd with it or does it have to be another speedtouch one. I have no idea about this sort of thing so would be grateful if someone could help me out!

Most ADSL routers provided by ISPs are locked to that companies accounts.
If you buy a generic one of any make (eg. from Ebuyer / Dabs / PC World), it should be possible to configure it to work with any ISP. The O2 one will almost certainly be locked to O2‘s system.
Be careful asking for a Router – that may cause problems. There are ADSL Modem/Router boxes that connect via the phone, and Routers which work with Cable internet.
Make sure you are clear you want an ADSL type, not the Cable type (assuming you are on ADSL via the phone line). You can get both type with or without wireless as well, so check this also.
