Question by Tomás: Still “Cannot create new network connection!?
Hello!

Following some suggestion here’s an ignoramous bothering you all again!

—–This is / was my initial query:
“Cannot create new network connection!?
Have an Acer 7520 that was causing problems – it crashed and the recovery discs I bought from Acer were crap, so I had Windows XP Service Pack 2 installed on it.
Alles gut… as they say, but….
Usually use a wireless connection and all’s well but I am currently staying at a place which has a broadband connection – no connection when I plug in the ol’ broadband cable.
In the pre XP Service Pack 2 days, my notebook would connect automatically to any broadband… now it doesn’t and creating a new connection results in zero, i.e. no icon, no nothing.
I have detected a modem on this notebook – HDAUDIO Soft Data Fax Modem with SmartCP which is enabled and ‘working’, so I don’t know what to do.
Please help!”—–

And then following two answers I submitted a new question containing some info from these answers…

—–”Following some answers I have recieved I can confirm that I did get all the missing drivers for this revamped Acer… installed them all… have also checked device manager and all is cool there. I have also reinstalled the modem – just in case this was missbehaving.
Everything is enabled but I still can’t create a network connection for broadband use – perhaps Service Pack 3 is interfering with this as I have heard XP Service Pack 2 has caused problems in the past when people try to create a network connection for broadband use!”—–

This was followed by this answer:

—–”Are you using an ethernet cable from a broadband modem or from a router, either way did you validate that you have received a valid IP address for the network. Did you check your ethernet connection status to see if you have a 192.168.x.x IP address? Did you try and ping the default gateway? SP3 should work fine and not present any problems for broadband Internet connections. I would upgrade to SP3.
Turn off your wireless card and ping 127.0.0.1 to test its own basic network setup. If you don’t get 4 valid replies you have an ethernet card problem.
Also right click on network connection icon in System tray and do a “Repair”.
Lastly what does a “HD AUDIO Soft Data Fax Modem ” have to do with anything?” ——

Now… I have located the Ethernet – its an Atheros AR5007EG Wireless Network Adapter, Version 5.3.0.56 and it is working properly…. got confused earlier with modems.
Well, couldn’t locate my ip address following the cmd and ipconfig/all prompts – couldn’t see an address.
What now? I have looked at the following suggestions from the last answer and added my comments:

“Are you using an ethernet cable from a broadband modem or from a router, either way did you validate that you have received a valid IP address for the network?”
= I’m just plugging in a cable at someone’s house – how do I know if it’s a braodband modem or if it’s a router?

“Did you check your ethernet connection status to see if you have a 192.168.x.x IP address?”
= couldn’t do this… I’m not clued up to check IP addresses properly, although I followed a suggestion as to how to do this, but couldn’t see an IP address in the cmd box results.

“Did you try and ping the default gateway? SP3 should work fine and not present any problems for broadband Internet connections. I would upgrade to SP3.”
= don’t know how to ping the gateway… sorry! But I have upgraded to SP3 in my wireles days.

“Turn off your wireless card and ping 127.0.0.1 to test its own basic network setup. If you don’t get 4 valid replies you have an ethernet card problem.”
= managed to execute this command – resulted in 4 packets received so I guess I have a problem… what now?

“Also right click on network connection icon in System tray and do a “Repair”.
= there’s no network connection icon as I can’t set this up… my initial dillemma… there’s only a wireless one which I can’t use with broadband.

Hope more useful info can come my way!!
(Thanks to all so far)
