I have 2MB broadband connection and have recently a wireless router to my desktop to support wireless surfing on my laptop. Since doing this, when I use streaming video or facebook chat on either the desktop or laptop, it continuously drops the connection. Setanta sports live streaming hangs every 30 or so seconds and facebook chat continually times out / disconnects? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

This can be caused by several things
1) Neighbouring networks on the same channel – try setting the broadcast channel on the router 2 steps higher or lower
2) Electrical interference from portable phones – they tend to use the same 2.4Ghz frequency – switch them off and see if it makes a difference, fluorescent lights and other faulty electrical equipment can interfere
3) Weak router signal, use a better aerial or powerline connectors. Poor match between router and wifi adapter- for best performance use same brand equipment.
4) Try updating the firmware in the router and wifi adapter and using the latest software
