Q&A: why does my broadband fail when I connect an additional wireless router to extend it’s range?
Question by ROGER H: why does my broadband fail when I connect an additional wireless router to extend it’s range?
Sky Broadband, poor wireless performance (cannot use laptop or printer) so have plugged a previous wireless router into the Sky one with excellent results for 10mins or so then cannot connect to Internet until it unplugged.

Because they’re too close together
Give your answer to this question below!

There can be several reasons.
First, upgrade the firmware on the routers to the most recent available from the maker. There may be a firmware weakness that causes this.
Second, make sure the LAN IP address of both routers are NOT the same. If one is 192.168.1.1, make the other 192.168.1.2 and make the default gateway the IP address of the router that interfaces with your modem. If both have the same IP address you may well see the problems you describe.
Third turn of DHCP on the second router; it may be providing IP addresses that conflict with the original unit and this can cause the problems to which you refer.
Reboot all client pcs on the network after making the above changes and it may solve the problems.
