Q&A: How do I find out what broadband speed I am getting?
Question by King Ra: How do I find out what broadband speed I am getting?
I use a speedtesting site which gives me and upstream number and a downstream number and an IP Profile number
how do know what MEG i am getting from those results?

Just go to http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest. It’s free, and pretty accurate. Hope this helps.
Give your answer to this question below!

Data transfer speeds are typically measured in bits as the base unit. Bits are the smallest data unit. What you are thinking about in terms of storage space is usually measured in bytes.
1 Byte = 8 bits.
Now a “MEG” means 1 million (it’s actually 1,048,576 bytes, but we’ll keep it at 1,000,000 for simplicity).
What you are probably thinking about when you’re saying a “MEG” is 1,000,000 BYTES, or 8,000,000 bits.
Remember that data transfer speed is measured in bits.
Mbps = Mega (1,000,000) bits per second
Kbps = Kilo (1,000) bits per second
bps = bits per second.
Whatever your speed test result gives you (M, K, etc), multiple that number by the corresponding # of bits as shown just above.
Then divide that number by 1,000,000 and you will get your number of “MEG”s.
And is the unit of measure you are getting a big “B” (Byte) or little “b” (bit). If you see a little b, you have to divide the final number by 8 to convert the bits to Bytes.
It depends on what the number your downstream and upstream is. If the figure you are getting is say 1024kB/s then you are getting 10MEG.
Divide the number you see by 8
