Q&A: Can I use any broadband cable modem to connect to the internet?
Question by Martin: Can I use any broadband cable modem to connect to the internet?
My provided broadband modem is broken and I need to replace it. Is it possible to buy any generic broadband modem (cable in this case) and plug it in and go? Or will I need to buy the providers prescribed (and overpriced) modem to replace the existing one?
Cheers

yes, any broadband cable will work.

It is true that you can use any router/modem, however this is dependant on your ISP providing you with the correct settings, if they can’t/won’t then you’ll end up with a router that you can’t use. If you’re router is broken and you’ve had it less than 12 months your ISP should replace this for free as it is still in warranty. If you are out of your warranty and out of the minimum term contract for broadband, consider changing provider and getting a new free router. Either way it’s cheaper than buying a new one!
Any modem/router will work, that’s why they sell them.
