Phone line all crackling and hardly any broadband, What could be wrong?
Question by tech guy: Phone line all crackling and hardly any broadband, What could be wrong?
For 3 years we have had fine phone lines and have been getting 8meg broadband. Over the past week the broadband speed got worse and worse until it has nearly stopped and now when we use the phone there is a extremely load fuzzy, crackling noise. What could be wrong?

I had this problem with BT for 18months, I got so fed up waiting on them to sort the problem out I cancelled and went with ntl, haven’t looked back since.
They told me they had changed 3 different cables, from the exchange to my house. Changed something at the exchange and said there wasn’t a problem. The last engineer that came said “it’s annoyin when u get a problem like this” closed his case and left! thanks, great help lol
Line noise most likely. I live in a rural area and my phones are awful. If you go the little gray box on the outside of your house where your phone lines come in from the wire and go into your house, open that cover and plug in a phone to the jack that’s in that box. If you hear the crackling noise still, it’s an outside line problem that the phone company will fix for free. If you don’t hear it, it’s an inside line problem, and depending if you have the warranty line service or not you may have to pay for it yourself. Should give you a starting point anyway, and if you call them, they will ask you to do this anyway, so may as well get it out of the way. Most likely a loose connection somewhere, either on the line outside or in your house.
