Netgear 2000 proving unreliable after 12 months. It’s overheating and the ethernet fails… wireless (for now) carries on fine. A bit of research shows that this is a common problem. Just out of warranty and I’m looking for a non Netgear alternative.

I have had no problems with any other Netgear products before this but having has the DGN2000 for just over a year (unfortunately) the ethernet ports have started to degrade and then fail. Looking at the Netgear forums this seems to be an issue caused by this device running very hot. In any case it is no use to me now so I have had to junk it and go back to my DG834PN which still works fine. Given the many issues reported I strongly recommend that you anyone in the market for a wirelss acces point seriously look at other models.

I am a big fan of Netgear products. They look good, are easy to set up, and (in my experience) offer good reliability and performance for the price. I have set up two DG834N routers for members of my family; both are still working well after 3 years. For myself, I decided to go for the DGN2000, because it’s cheaper and I live in a fairly small flat.
Like the DG834N, the DGN2000 is easy to set up. The wizard automatically detects your ISP’s settings, and all you have to enter is your username and password. Wireless connectivity is similarly straightforward. To begin with, the DGN2000 worked well. A couple of days ago, however, the wireless connection started dropping out. Initially I thought this was because I had set the wireless mode to ‘upto 270 Mbps’. According to the user manual, only ‘upto 130 Mbps’ is compatible with 802.11b/g adaptors, which suggests you cannot use 802.11n devices at full speed if you also have 802.11b/g devices on your network. It turns out this is not the culprit, and wireless connectivity is no more reliable using ‘upto 130 Mbps’ or even ‘g only’.
In fairness, I do live in a densely populated area, where there appear to be more wireless networks than people. Perhaps this explains why the problems began when people returned home after the New Year. Either way, I will have to return the DGN2000 and revert to the router supplied by my ISP 4 years ago, which looks uglier than the Netgear, but seems to work better. Maybe I will have to save up for a DG834N…

I bought this to replace a Belkin ADSL2+ ROUTER W/MODEM * N1 VISION which proved unreliable and didn’t allow assignation of fixed IP addresses and am well pleased with the decision to go back to Netgear.
It copes well with my rather complicated network – I live in a big old house with thick walls; as well as the wired and wireless n network, there’s a powerline element using a Netgear WGXB102 54 Mbps Wall-Plugged Wireless Range Extender Kit and a Netgear XE104 85 Mbps Wall-Plugged Ethernet 4-port Switch, a gigabit switch, Slingbox Classic (UK), Windows Home Server box, Media Centre Vista 32 PC on the powerline, several Vista 32 laptops and two desktops, one running Vista 64 and an XP veteran connected to the router; there are also two network printers, a HP Color Laserjet 2600n *No Toners* on the powerline and a HP c8100 on the wireless.
Assigning fixed IP addresses where necessary was straightforward, and no reboots have been required in the month I’ve owned it.
My only minor niggle is that I have to reconnect occasionally to the network with one of the laptops near the edge of the coverage area.

I used to have DG834G but the time passes and tings get older, so I decided to go for something new and better. Being satisfied with my previous Netgear I went for DGN2000.
My first impression: looks fine, even if a stand is not available. The first drawback came from the software – no VPN, so this one is a bit stripped-down version. OK, this is not a big problem if one doesn’t need it.
Than, the daily usage comes and because there is no stand, it sits flat and overheats big-time. I could barely touch it, so the stand from the old box came into the aid. Still was hot but not scary any more.
Finally, the most difficult part of this model to cope with is its wireless signal. When initially connected it shows 270Mbps but it can gradually drop up to … 1Mbps!!! It may depend on your neighbours (their boxes) and the box location but no more than 78Mbps for N-draft was possible.
At the same time, location and conditions and on a fully separated channel the Linksys WAG160 was offering 130Mbps, constant and stable (nice design, however not the best).
I have 2 computers with N-draft, one G+ and one hardwired and none could find another because of the very intermittent signal strength or its presence at all. Pings noted from 2ms to `Request timed out’, even to the gateway. Whatever I did, it didn’t work properly. Well, it could be just my unit and I returned it as faulty. Some other reviews backed mine and some are opposite – could it be than … a poor manufacturing? I wouldn’t recommend it.
Now, I have Draytek Vigor 2820 instead, it is excellent.

Netgear DGN2000 Wireless-N Router is a great upgrade from the old G series Netgear I used to have. I have worked in IT for around 9 years and we recommend Netgear Routers as they are reliable and easy to configure, this router has only strengthened my belief that Netgear are the best home router manufacturers out there! Where I used to get 1 bar signal strength with my old DG834G I now get full strength (Excellent). I was going to hardwire my house next time I did anything under the floor but this changed everything. A great bit of kit, buy one!
