I apologise if youve heard this all b4. It’s just that i want to take advantage of the free broadband but i can’t stand being restricted in location to 2 metres from the phone socket in the living room! THANKS!

If it’s an Ethernet socket, not a phone socket, buy a wireless router. I recommend the Linksys WRT54GS. (If it’s a phone socket you probably have a modem connected to it, and an Ethernet socket on the modem, so it’ll work too.)

I believe the ‘free’ broadband through talktalk comes with only a modem, not a wireless router (which you need to do what you mention) . Try PCWorld as they have wireless ADSL routers (will work on talk talk) for about £30

Firstly you will require a wireless router, this connects to your modem and sends wireless internet signals. if your computer has wireless built in the simply search for avilable networks and connect to your one ( you will probably want to secure it). if your laptop does not have wireless built in you will need a wireless laptop card which can be purchased from most electrical stores, note that you do not want a PCI one you want one specifically for a lapop
A router to send your signal out and a “dongle” on your lap top to receive.
