I have an old Dan computer and don’t know what an ethernet socket looks like. However it has a couple of USB ports.

No, you can’t. Unless you can somehow fit the ethernet jack into the USB port.

hi yes you can use your USB ports, but firstly it will put a small load on the processor and secondly if your computer is old it will only have USB 1 type ports and these are slooooow about 10 times slower than USB 2, an ethernet socket looks like this http://wiki.pomona.edu/pub/FAQ/NetworkDormSetup/LaptopEthernet.JPG its slightly bigger than the modem port
yes they have adapters for that. the ethernet connector is called an RJ-45 which looks like a phone jack plug but a little bigger. phone jack is a RJ-11 more then likely the PC will have the RJ-45 built in if not you can always buy an adapter card to install too for $ 10
It is like phone jack, if you have usb port then use it. Besides this kind of modem can work either way.
An ethernet looks a bit bigger than a dial up modem.
You can purchase a USB to Ethernet adapter that you can get online with. They are around $ 30 CDN
