My BT bills are enormous (my own fault, I use the phone a lot) and I’ve been wondering whether to do without the landline altogether. I e-mail a lot, and could use my mobile for emergencies.
Would I still be able to have broadband?

you gonna have to have a line of some sort for broadband,
if you don’t want to make calls the best thing would be a ntl or cable broadband line…you dont need to have a phone contract and its unlimited usage unlike bt…and i dont think theres any line rental just a 12 month contract

Option 1: look for a provider in your area that will give you broadband using cable TV.
Option 2: See if there is a wireless provider in your area.
Option 3: see if there is someone who will give you DSL on a “dry” pair, that is, no phone line.
It is technically possible, it is a matter of whether they are willing to let you and then find out someone who knows what you are talking about….this will get more common as time goes on. You can do it in most parts of Canada.
Cable – no landline
Best option will be NTL – it’s cable so you don’t need a landline. They’re good for price / service too.
NTL Cable if you can get it in your area..£24.99 a month for 2mb speed, no land line needed.
There are two types of broadband in the UK:
Cable and ADSL
ADSL uses the normal phone line. In the UK, if you get ADSL broadband you are forced to rent the phone line from BT, even if your broadband provider is not BT.
Cable broadband uses the TV cable, which is physically separate to the phone line. So you can get cable broadband without renting a BT line.
Many households can’t be connected to cable though. It depends where you live. Check with your local cable provider if it’s possible for you.
As for high bills, why don’t you use skype instead of BT? I make an average of one hour of international phonecalls a day (long distance relatinship) and my phone bill is just £15 / month.
yes, I don’t have a land line!!! you got 3 choices…DSL….high speed Internet thru Cable…FIOB( fibre optics) or Wi-Fi-fixed-max…like clear-wire…Verizon usually has a land-line for DSL…if you go it in your area!!
clear-wire is the cheapest and fastest…but for phone I got VoIP with E911, no problem!
you don’t need an land-line for DSL, yes its a line but only for DSL…like Verizon and Earth-link provides…
Don’t know if it’s available where you are, but Vodafone New Zealand has recently released its ‘Vodem’ – a device which plugs into your USB port and provides broadband access over Vf’s 3G network. Totally portable – plug it into any computer. I’m hugely tempted!
Yes you can. I have cable broadband from NTL, (just broadband, no phone line or cable TV), quite independent of my BT phone line
check around for wireless providers.We haven’t had a landline for over a year.they’re a little more expensive but you don’ have the cost of a landline.they’re all high speed connections.We have Clearwire service and it is just as fast if not faster than dsl.
