Is it possible to convert standard talk talk broadband to a wireless system?
Question by bty1775729: Is it possible to convert standard talk talk broadband to a wireless system?
I currently have have my landline phone and broadband from talk talk. The modem that came with the package is fine but i really want to get wireless. Is it possible to replace my modem with something like a netgear router? I want to keep an ethernet connection on my main pc but also connect two laptops wirelesly. Is it as simple as going to PC World and stumping up £65 and just changing modems?
Thanks inadvance

Yes it is that simple. Simply replace the ADSL modem/router that they gave you with something like a Netgear Wireless Router. You’ll be able to plug in a cabled ethernet connection (up to 4 generally) and then have wireless connectivity to your laptops.
Personally, i’d go for a Linksys.

I am operating my broadband on a land line but I notice that the router supplied by talktalk is marked “wireless ADSL router” what do I need to do to go wireless? I ask for help as I am a 72 yearold silver surfer.
yes make sure its adsl and not dsl as thats for cable go for belkin
something along those lines, you need an adsl router & will need to configure it with your current settings (shouldn’t be too difficult-so no need to pay pc world to do it)
yes i had it before i changed server
Not a problem.. All you have to do is connect the ethernet cable

that you connect to your computer to a wireless router. Then its just a matter of setting up the router by following the quick start guide that comes with your router.
Also make sure that your computer has wireless support. Otherwise you will have to get a wireless interface for your router.
You don’t even have to replace it, just buy a wireless access point and connect the two devices with a cat-5 patch cable.
If you choose to go for just one device, be sure that you make note of the current settings (ip address, subnet mask, gateway, dns).
You should do fine:-)
