I need fast broadband for my home business, but I don’t want it to conflict with the broadband I already have
Question by radford_5k: I need fast broadband for my home business, but I don’t want it to conflict with the broadband I already have
I’m in the process of starting up my own home Internet business, and I need the fastest broadband connection possible. But I don’t want it to conflict with or replace the broadband connection that I already have. I just need an additional broadband connection put in, that I can link up to my laptop. Any suggestions?

what kinda broadband you got?
if you got cable you can just buy a 2nd cable modem and run them both
for 2x the cost of course.
if you only way it for your laptop you could get a card from the cell phone ppl but it would cost the same as another cable modem

There really is no point in having two broadband connections to your home.
I am a web designer and therefor run an ‘internt based business’ and manage many other business internet sites form my computer at home.
Just go with the fastest package you need for your business and get two email addresses, one for home use and one for business and only set up the business one on the computer you use for business. Also onoly set up FTP and other access to your business websites on your business PC/laptop.
So why would you want to pay for two broadband connections?
When it really is not necessary as a broadband connection with several computers set up to access it via a wired or wireless network ( go with wired if you want speed) will not make the broadband connection run any slower however many PCs/laptops are connected to it and your business use on one computer will not interfear with your home use.
I have BT total unlimited package – the fastest for my area which is very rural and 5 computers/laptops connected to it by a network, two used for business 3 for home use i.e children, husband etc and one game system used on line wirelessly.
As I do not set up the email for my business on my ‘home use’ computers and visa versa my business use does not have any effect on my home use
If you really want to pay for two broadband packages you would have to have an additional separate phone line installed to your home……..
but I just do not see why you would want to??
If you are in an area where you can get ATT DSL service, call them and tell them you want a second ‘dry’ DSL line. A ‘dry’ DSL line has no dial tone or regular phone service attached to it, just the DSL access. It will run completely separate from your current phone service and any other broadband connection.
you are only allowed one on the line that is supplied you can only have one mac number so it looks like you will be stuck with the one you have or if you change to a faster connection speed you will have to share it. failing that you will have to have a new line in and that may be very expensive
I don’t understand your problem…. You can have as meany broadband connections as you like, but only use 1 at a time in the machine….. especially if you use ethernet as the connection to the broadband modem, be it cable or ADSL.
It should just be a matter of unplugging your machine from 1 to the other. This will not cause any conflict.
If however you are using USB to connect to your modem, and you use your machine to start the network connection, then that is different, although you should again have no problems if you set up 2 shortcuts to the network connections for each service.
However, this will be a slow connection as USB is slower than Ethernet.
Obviously you’ll need 2 connections coming into your house. BT could provide another line. If you are in cable area, Virgin are your best bet. Their available bandwidth is huge.
It is physically possible to duplex 2 connections down the same bit of wire, but if you run them both at once you get half the speed.
