The MAC address is the address (much like your physical address at your residence) that is unique to your network card in your computer or other networking device (router, cable modem, etc)
Is your internet provider cable based or DSL? Technically, either one should provide you with the cable modem or DSL modem needed to get an internet connection — however, if you have your own, you will have to provide them the MAC address on the DSL or Cable modem you have for them to provision your internet connection.
Mac address should be something like this: 02:24:E7:64:97:01 and may or may not have “:” or “-” as separators.

Ignore the “computer consultant” as he should know a mac code (Migration authorisation code) is completely different from the physical mac address of a piece of hardware and is in fact used by ISP’s to TAG your line, you should be able to contact any provider you wish to use and be told who currently holds the tags for your line them simply contact said provider and request a cease of the service or the MAC code
