Download speeds depend on widley varying factors such as distance from the exchange, the quality of the cable being used, the volume of traffic at any given time, and the server speed as well as the weather. A warm cable is much faster than a cold cable if you didn’t know that already. But there you are.
Also download speeds vary from time to time depending on server load and output as well as your geographical location and altitude.
To check your download speed you can do one of three things.
1) Check Sky Broadband Speed Check Service at their website. All Broadband providers have this service available.
You can go to the service by clicking on the router icon on your desktop. From there you should be able to see a breakdown of your service.
2) You can go to an independent website that specializes in speed tests but I would strongly recommend not doing so as these sites more often than not place malware on your PC leaving you vulnerable to hackers and unwanted spyware.
3) And this is highly favorable to you simply call Sky Broadband up and ask them to run a speed test for you. You’ll get a speed report within twenty four hours by either e-mail or router log. Just make sure you don’t go online when they’re running the tests as any activity will influence the outcome.
Now for video downloads.
Up to 8Mb/s is absolutely fine for this. In fact it may be more than enough depending on what you’re downloading. Speeds here also depend on many factors such as the quality of the video, compression, size and where you’re downloading it from as well as copyright tagging. If it’s copyrighted the file has to go through a series of verifying servers to make sure it is valid material which can increase download times greatly.

The “Mega broadband” hype is just that. Hype!
While you make be able to plug into a 3+ megabits pipe you will never (at least in the foreseeable future) be allowed to use it. The companies paying for the bandwidth, on the servers we use, cannot allow us to tie in at those speeds. That is why your download speeds change from second to second.
Downloads.com for instance. I average between 150Kbps and 300Kbps. I have scene as much as 650Kbps at Microsoft.com but it is rare.
I have two cable connections, a 6Mbps512Kbps at home supporting 13 computers. The connection at work only has 2 computers attached and it is 768Kbps256Kbps and handles 100% of my needs.
If you have only one computer and are not constantly downloading flavors of linux, hundreds of MBs, you should be fine with a low level or Lite version of cable or DSL.
I have recommended Cox cable (Value Pack 256Kbps256Kbps) to 73 people in the last 30 months and to my knowledge none have upgraded. I have done the same with BellSouth’s DSL Lite (256Kbps128Kbps) and of the 24 people I sent there way they have all been quite satisfied.
$ 20 verse $ 40mo for band or may not use.
One more note. If you decide to upgrade they wont be mad. Start low and move up to what you need.
They say “up to (attach big number here)” to sucker you in. Its only 8meg in some areas, depending on the level of coverage. Phone them up and ask them exactly what your area gets.
Only matters if you down load loads of vidios.
