How do I connect my lap-top to my broadband modem?
Question by mattJ: How do I connect my lap-top to my broadband modem?
At the moment I am using the airpot from my laptop but the signal is very weak as I am quite far from the modem.
Can I just plug my laptop into the one of the ‘ethernet’ ports on the modem with a long ethernet lead? Will that give me a full strength signal?

yes, you can plug directly into the (router).
What do you think? Answer below!

If you plug into the router with a cable you’d have a full 100 Mbps connection, there’s either a connection (or a faulty cable if not – ‘signal strength’ doesn’t come into it with a cable
If the distance is long, or complicated router, then another option would be to consider powerline adaptors (try looking on Amazon for Solwise 85 Mbps adaptors) and the data goes over the mains wiring in the house.
It’s a neater solution if there is a long cable run to make the connection, and you can add more adaptors if you ever add more PCs, and now you can even get some ADSL routers with powerline connection built in. Has great reliability and security too – wifi can be received by neighbours.
You can plug it in. Also take a look at your modem/router combo setup and see if there is an option to turn up the transmit power on the router.
If you want to increase the range of your wireless network you can also get a second wireless router and set the second router to bridge mode.
The routers have to the same network name(SSID), network password, channel (not auto), and security/encryption has to be set to WEP to make it work.
