Does the modem for bt broadband infinity always have to be switched on?
Question by els: Does the modem for bt broadband infinity always have to be switched on?
Hi have recently had bt infinity fibre optic broadband fitted and engineer told me that modem must always be switched on/plugged in-even when not using broadband. However, a friend who also has it doesn’t always keep hers switched on. Could anyone please give me some clarification regarding this?

I would take sides with the engineer on this point of permanently switched on. A third party is always suspect and you only have their word what they are saying is the absolute truth.
Until you can get another person or a few other people to confirm that your not required to keep the modem permanently switched on, then do what you’ve been told to do by the engineer.

Regard your modem as your phone, you don’t unplug that when you go out or go to bed do you. Your Modem is very much like the phone ..it talks to your pc at night and keeps all things in good order. There’s nil power consumption to speak off, certainly less than your phone….its been designed to work continuously 24/7
Every now and then the Home Hub receives firmware upgrades. This happens in the late night, when no one is working in the computer. Switching it off would mean losing out on the updates.
Again, every time you switch of the Hub, the server loses connection to it. It considers the connection to be unstable and brings down the speed to stabilize the line.
So leave it powered on at all times except when you go out on a holiday.
leave the modem switched On, this way you will always have a connection and won’t have to wait for the modem to connect and settle down.
I always leave my modem On in fact it has been On for the entire length of time that I have had Internet Broadband which is around 6 years now,
I also leave the Router switched on as well.
you can turn the computer Off if you want this is optional, but leave the modem and the router if you have one fitted switched ON.
no harm will come to the device’s and so long as you don’t cover them with anything and they are placed on a smooth surface then they should not over heat and will be fine.
I’m on Virgin‘s fibre optic cable service and my modem is never switched off.
In fact, the computer remains on 24/7/365 as well.
The only time they go off is if I have to reboot either of them.
Modern electronics don’t require switching off now.
