Does having your Broadband Provider actually work in your Local Exchange help your Broadband Speeds?
Question by WindowsPCZone: Does having your Broadband Provider actually work in your Local Exchange help your Broadband Speeds?
Hi, I’m with TalkTalk, and they have permission by BT to actually control their broadband properly in Kendal’s Local Exchange, and I was wondering if this makes the Broadband speed improve. As I’m with TalkTalk, who have permissions by BT, but when I see people on Tiscali, who just used BT‘s Exchange, they get awful speeds.
Am I right in saying this?

To degree, yes.

That is called local loop unbundling, thats when the provider install their won equipment, e.g. talktalk, sky, o2 and so on. They then can offer a cheaper price, faster speeds and better support. But people are often connected to a service called ipstream from bt, which most providers use when they havent “unbundled” and exchange, it actually costs them more to provide internet via ipstream, than what it is to rent space to install their own equipment. So it is better to have them locally.
So yes you are right
Probably not. I too am with Talk Talk & get a speed of approx 2mb. On enquiring, because my local exchange is just 2 miles from where I live, and is un bundled, I asked for a Booster Package, & they said it wouldn’t make any difference to my speed in this instance. Not being technically minded, I don’t know the reason.
Yes – once the exchange is “unbundled” the ISP can supply broadband speeds that exceed the old connections supplied by BT. This is because their newly installed equipment that now controls your broadband connection is better than the old equipment.
