Do you have to be in a 3G area to use mobile broadband?
Question by The Shadow: Do you have to be in a 3G area to use mobile broadband?
With the USB broadband stick that you can get in the UK from t-mobile and vodafone etc for your laptop, do you have to be in a 3G area to use the net or will just a normal signal do? I dont care about speeds, just want to know if any phone signal will get you online. What’s the performance like, anyone who’s got one?

in a word YES.
mobile broadband dongles or phones need to have a 3G signal to give you mobile broadband in the MB transfer rates.
if you are out of range of 3g some may try the 2G EDGE connection but the best you can get on that is 128kps
