Ignore your desktop icon and go elsewhere in your system to find the BT connection icon. Delete the short-cut from the desktop.
Remember the desktop is only the short-cut to the main file. And as such its just an avenue to save you time and make it more convenient. You can get this hassle and it can be a pain. You could do a System Restore and get back to where you were before and your icon should work just fine.
These little hic-cups are not uncommon with computers, you just have to know how to kick start it back into to behaving. Delete the icon, and then go back to the main file and click for the short-cut again. To be sent to the desktop. Then see if it opens automatically as it should.
Playing around like this doesn’t do any harm, and computers can be fickle at the best of times. I know I’ve had it and I have learn-ed. (I hope).

There is no such thing as a BT Browser.
British telecom do not make computer software
and they definitely do not have a browser.
What you have is internet explorer with a BT/Yahoo toolbar.
which i might add is loaded with spyware.
If any of your shortcuts stop working,
delete them,
run the registry cleaner found in ccleaner : http://www.piriform.com/
Then simply make a new shortcut.
if you do not know how to make new shortcuts,
use the help and support built in to windows.
full instructions are in there.
