A virtual private network, often abbreviated as a VPN, can be an excellent tool for allowing users (employees, most often) to remotely access a network that provides internet connectivity as well as various files, data, and so on within the host network. There are many different uses for a virtual private network, and there are different types of VPN that are used. The most common type of virtual private network is an internet VPN, used for remote access. In this case, a remote network (as opposed to a single client) would be joined to a separate network, forming a larger intranet. This intranet is created by connecting two VPN servers, effectively creating a single larger network. This is very useful when two networks that normally operate independently need to share data or another functionality for a period of time.

Lastly, a strong VPN service can create a controlled access system to the various subnets within a network, called a local network or intranet VPN. This type of virtual private network does not require the use of an ISP or cabling for public networks. The primary reason intranet virtual private networks are used is to offer the security benefits of a VPN to an organization. This is often used to protect wireless networks for businesses.
